I have a fair amount of sodium carbonate on hand and would like to make use of it rather than purchase another chemical. The formula for TF-3 Alkaline Rapid Fixer calls for the use of sodium metaborate:

Ammonium thiosulfate 60% – 800 ml
Sodium sulfite (anhydrous) – 60 g
Sodium metaborate – 5 g
Water to make 1 litre

Would it be possible to replace the sodium metaborate with an appropriate amount of sodium carbonate? Would the following formula yield similar results:

Ammonium thiosulfate 60% – 800 ml
Sodium sulfite (anhydrous) – 60 g
Sodium carbonate – 3 g
Water to make 1 litre

(Sorry for asking what is probably a very basic question. Chemistry was my bane in high school. )

You may have a look at the book "Way Beyond Monochrome" second edition on page 504. There you find the Alkaline Fixer (RF-2):
Water: 750ml
Ammonium thiosulfate: 120g
Sodium sulfite (anhydrous): 15g
Sodium carbonate: 0.7 g
Water to make 1 liter

Good luck!

Animalcito -- thanks for the suggestion. I will probably go with RF-2 rather than TF-3.
