A question about shutters.

Hi,

I have a Schneider 90mm F8 in a Synchro Compur 0 which could almost certainly use a service. I've been wondering whether or not to just spash out on a new shutter. So will this lens fit in a Copal 0 shutter without modification? if so what's involved in fitting the lens, is it just a matter of screwing it all together or is there more to it?

I know it's not the cheaper option.

Chances are that unscrew, rescrew will do.

But to be sure measure the length of the lens (rim of barrel to rim of barrel is easiest) in the old shutter and then again in the new. If the distances don't agree, the lens and both shutters will have to go to a competent machinist. If the lens is shorter in the new shutter, a spacer will needed. If longer, the new shutter will have to be trimmed.

But really and all kidding aside, having the old shutter overhauled will cost a lot less than a new shutter. If you buy another used shutter, it will need a CLA too.

The #0 Synchro Compur and the #0 Copal shutters are the same size. The big difference is that the Synchro Compur is a better made shutter. Get it a CLA and save a lot of money. Carol Miller (Flutot's Camera Repair) does a great job on these for a fraction of what a new Copal would cost.

Super-Angulons require very accurate spacing to give their best performance. It's generally not a good idea to replace their shutters with new ones, unless Schneider does the job. Get a CLA, unless the shutter is reduced to a bag of loose parts glued together by rust.

As Dan says, most likely just transferring the cells will work optically. But you would need to make or buy new aperture scales since the scales aren't the same on Compur and Copal shutters. I second the advice that a CLA of your existing shutter makes more sense. Carol Miller does excellent work at a very reasonable price. I don't know who you can find closer. Only if the shutter is very broken and requires much more than a CLA might a replacing the shutter be cost effective.

The shorter, and older, the lens, the more likely a remount means re-collimation.

Fix the shutter.

Second that the Compurs are nicer than the Copals, at least the later Compurs with even spacing between the apertures.

OK, I'm convinced. Sounds like a service is the way to go. Any recommendations for a UK based company?
