Let's have a big round of applause for hoffy for keeping this thing running so smoothly. Thanks so much for being such an efficient coordinator.

Mine arrived yesterday. Thanks to Hoffy for the logistical work and to everyone who participated. There is the usual interesting and diverse range of approaches to subject matter and technique.

Thanks for the kind words folks. It really isn't that much of an imposition.

Feel free to make comments. I know I have been a bit slack over the last few exchanges - maybe I am all out of words. I'd like to think that I can make a comment or two this time (but not tonight - my naughty database is now working fine and its time for bed).

Cheers

My comments -

Michael W - Print #1. Thanks for sending two prints. I really love #1. It has great contrast and a lot of detail. It's a pity they trimmed the plant back, but at least you caught it earlier. Print #2. Thanks for the extremely limited edition Fuji pack film print. The grass in the foreground neatly leads the eye into the rest of the image.

Ozxplorer. At the Sawmill. Your split printing has worked wonders for what could otherwise have been ordinary. I love the way the printing has brought out the detail in the rope.

Carriage. St Kilda Rd. Another example of a portrait which shows that the subject does not need to be looking straight into the camera. You have captured a moment between the child and the adult but there is also enough background interest with the shadows and people. I love the way the shadows draw the eye into the rest of the image.

Hoffy. My Kind Of Waterfall. Wow, you have really captured the majesty of the Pontiac with its art deco features and awesome curves. It does indeed remind the viewer of a waterfall. The way the light hits one side of the car brings out the shapes nicely.

Thanks once again to everybody who participated and thanks again to hoffy for coordinating.

No worries at all hoffy. It's nice to know I'm not the only one looking for validation. Enjoy your break. (?) Thanks again for keeping this thing happening. It's a buzz to receive each package.

Yes it is a break. About to spend 10 days at sea, so thanks Kevin, I will!

In the new year we'll see about getting the next exchange running. I have been playing around with the idea of also doing this through Facebook to broaden the audience, but I don't want to alienate the photrio people and those who may not use social media.

Anyhow, let me take the chance to say thankyou to all those that have participated this year and have a merry Christmas!

Cheers.

Finally had a chance to write down my thoughts:

Hoffy - I've enjoyed your car pictures so far and this is no exception. I love how the lighting shows the crisp edges of the shiny chrome into the black at the bottom but the smooth tones of the bonnet fading away to the softness of the cabin.

Michael W - Firstly, thanks for the two prints. Print #1: Overall I like this print but it took me a bit to work out what was going on. My eye is drawn to the brighter patch and it takes a bit to see the spiral pattern. I think it's dependent on viewing light. When I look at it in proper viewing light I think it's good but in evening room light not set up for viewing it kind of gets lost. I think my photos do this too at times and I'm not sure on which side to err myself. I like the juxtaposition of the overgrown nature with the clearly man made sheet metal spiral and the range of tones. I also like the black border. Print #2: I like the colour analogue print. The lighting is interesting and I've never seen this film before.

Ozxlporer - I like the combination of textures in this photo. There's the rope, woods of varying roughness as well as the grain of HP5+ in rodinal. The tones are nice too with the focus on the lighter rope but interesting shadows in the background as you look around the image. Nice photo.

Kevin Caulfield - This photo is interesting. The water almost looks foggy but the sky is clear. I'd expect harsh light but due to (I suspect) the long exposure, the specular highlights are lost and so things are softer giving me a feeling of peace and calm with the sunrise, as if the noise and bustle of the day hasn't quite started yet. I quite like it.

Thanks everyone for participating and Hoffy for organising again.

Happy new year folks,

Well, I said I'd make some comments when I got back on deck...... Well, here I am, back on deck (or back off deck, considering I got back from a 10 day cruise on Friday!).

Ozexplorer
Looking at yours and Kevin's prints has given me a "why don't I print gloss more often?" moment. For me, I like the grain of the print and as Carriage said above, it works with the subject matter.

Kevin Caulfield
15 seconds hey? And the sun was still out? Without a doubt, the long exposure has made this image. I am a bit of a sucker for milky waters, so this one immediately appeals. The other thing that makes this one for me is that narrow beam of highlights as the sun glistens off the rocks

Carriage
This could be just a typical street scene, but the interaction between the child and the woman has a nice feel to it. I also like the play with light and shadows. There are some interesting shapes within this image and they are not just human.

Michael W
OK, firstly I am going to tackle the instant picture. The colours, the feel just screams retro. But, the sharpness of the image doesn't scream dodgy plastic Polaroid. FP100C is something that I got into rather late and have to admit I am very much lamenting its loss. Hopefully Doc's Kickstarter gets up and running!
As for the Fibre print - again, we have a nice play with light and shadows. I did spend a little bit of time turning it around to find the right way up, but once I realised what it was (based on the writing on the back), the image became a lot clearer. Again, nice to see some glossy paper. I really like the feel of fibre gloss.

OK, onto the next exchange. I'd like to see the exchange continue, but I have one dilemma - my darkroom has all of a sudden become out of service. The chest freezer that I have been using as a bench for my enlarger failed just before I went away. A new one arrives tomorrow, but is much narrower and much lower than the old one. I'll need to make yet another bench to sit over the top, to bring the height up to a more workable level.

There is another thing that I would like to bring up - As we are all aware, the numbers have dropped off. While it is nice to work in a small group, it would be good to get numbers up to the 10-12 level again. I have been toying with setting up a Facebook group for the exchange, to try and entice the members from the various Aussie film photography groups to join in, but I would only do it with the blessing of those who are regular participants. Without going into too may specifics, the exchange will all work the same, but will be accessible both by Facebook and by Photrio (I do not expect anyone to explicitly have to join Facebook to be involved).

What are your thoughts?

Cheers

Hi Ashley, I think your proposal might be the sort of thing that is necessary to get the numbers up. I have tried through word of mouth to encourage people to participate but none of them have actually followed through. I suspect that darkroom access might be a contributing factor as there are basically no public access darkrooms left in Sydney that I'm aware of.

Perhaps there could be an initial announcement (priority seating!) of each exchange on APUG, say for a couple of weeks so the members here won't miss out in case it becomes too popular and fills up. Then when those two weeks (or whatever) period expires it gets announced on Facebook and people can sign up there.

Thanks Michael.

Yes, Priority would be given to the members of Photrio. After all, this is where it started. We have some loyal long timers and I'd hate to see them being neglected.

I'll see how it goes. My biggest concerns with running a Facebook exchange is that people tend to be a bit more flippant, non committal or won't actually understand the rules and intent.

Hey Folks,

Sorry, I've been a bit slack over the last few days. Have to admit I haven't been enthused about a lot of things, so kicking off the next round has suffered a little.

I will post up a new thread at some stage this week (tapping this away as I am sitting at work). We'll see how we go with participants and then take it from there.

Cheers
