What the hell, I'm in. I would love to meet and share darkroom time with other printers. Thank you, Simon.

It seems many are confused about the difference between a private darkroom and public darkroom, I'm often finding businesses (like labs with darkroom rental time) as private... Is that correct? To me, private means a home darkroom and public is a storefront darkroom? Am I wrong?

There's also not an option for "partial darkroom" like me, my process is hybrid, so I have no actual darkroom but am willing to share all my dark tents, tanks, chemistry. Etc. To newbies looking to start etc.

Stone,
maybe it's the same thing that used to confuse me about schools in Merry Ol'England. Here a Private School is a private school and in England a Private School is what we call a Public School. Heck, we say 4x5 camera/film and they say 5x4. Go figure?

A public school is a private school with charitable status.

Tom

Pft! You crazy Britts, no wonder my ancestors left haha so "charitable" of you to take pitty on the poor with a private school funded by charity... Hahaa

I assume a for-profit education model could be termed a private school.

Tom

 I'm just being silly, the whole argument is irrelevant, the fact you have a "free" school for children is a benefit to the whole population and is a good thing.

My parents sent myself and my brother to Catholic (private) school. Of course, their taxes still supported the public schools, even though they never used that service. In our city, the public schools were/are safe, but the education level is not nearly as high. However, in a couple neighboring cities, there are public school systems that are just as good.

"Public" schools in the UK were originally called that because they were open to anyone who met their entrance qualifications, regardless of religion, affiliation or location. They were created in response to the fact that most early educational institutions were operated as part of churches.

What we call "public" here might best be referred to as "state funded" schools in the UK.

Now, as far as darkrooms go, here in the UK we have Private darkrooms in peoples' homes, not open to the Public which are usually not commercial, though there is nothing to stop a Private darkroom opening to the Public, provided they jump through all the planning and regulation. A Private darkroom that is open to the public is probably a commercial darkroom run as a business by a Private Company, but there is nothing that says Public Companies can't run commercial (be it Public or Private) darkrooms too (although I can't think of one); a commercial darkroom might be a Private darkroom if it is only affiliated with a private members club for example. A public darkroom might be a wholly commercial operation, or might be run by a Public Authority e.g. City Council, in which case it is a state-funded darkroom. Or it could, perhaps be a Public darkroom run by a charity, which in effect is an organisation run and funded by Private citizens on a non-commercial basis within guidelines set by the State. Clear?:laugh:

The site seems to be working. I just had my first inquiry about darkroom access from an Australian living in Copenhagen. He hasn't had any luck finding a darkroom for the last six months but we will meet for a chat next weekend and see what we can arrange.

I just registered. I taught classes some years back and miss it. I always seemed to learn something in different ways than just being on my own. It would also be enjoyable to find someone well-versed and learn from them, too.

I've been dragging my feet on a darkroom expansion project with idle equipment waiting for me to get nudged to some action. Perhaps the phone ringing would get me going again. I'm planning to retire in the next year, so hopefully, I'll have more time and energy to keep some photo projects going!
