A friend has just been looking through a box of old photography booklets and manuals, probably once belonging to her grandfather.

A USEFUL DEVELOPER
For Press work no better developer for plates and films can be recommended than Pyro Metol. This forms a most effective and energetic solution. It gives high speed and good density.
The following formula is a good one :
1.
Metol 20 grs.
Metabisulphite 60 grs.
Pyro 25
Water 10 ozs.
2.
Carbonate of Soda 2 ozs.
Water 10 ozs.
For use take equal parts of one and two.
For bromide papers any good Metol Hydrokinone developer may be used.
The following is an excellent formula :
Metol ... 25 grs.
Sulphite ... ... 200
Carbonate... ... 200
Hydrokinone ... 20
Bromide ... ... 15
Water ... 10 ozs.
Besides keeping well, it gives great contrast and clear whites on any good make of bromide paper.
