I was reading the Steve Simmons book and got to the section where he's recommending filters for black and white and got some suggestions and then sent me to my library or book store to where I would find "an abundance of informative books on the subject".
Any ideas of books on the subject? Thank you!

I got about a dozen books on that subject. But the most and the best are not in English...
The ultimate book still has to be written

In general thorough thinking about the subject should give you insight too. The major question is, what colour of the scene you want to put at what grey-level.
A range of filter-curves (e.g. Wratten-listing) and some mathematical knowledge would help too.

One of the best filter books I've found are the filter catalogs: B+W and Hoya.

"The Photographer's Guide to Filters" by Lee Frost.

Covers the basics.

I can read some German. I'll look those two books up. Thank you!

Though published by a filter manufacturer [Lee Filters], the book "Inspiring Professionals: the landscape photographer's guide to using filters" is excellent. It includes sections by various well-known photographers such as Charlie Waite, Joe Cornish, etc..

Kodak had several in their series of publications most of them are soft cover.

Thank you very much! I've ordered some of those books and I'll check out the PDFs next.

Eastman Kodak Company, Kodak Filters, Kodak Publication B-3, 1981 (Ralph's book is excellent; highly recommend.)

Also, older but very comprehensive and useful: Photographic Filters, by Glover and Wakefield. http://thelightfarm.com/cgi-bin/PhotoFilters.py

and Natural Light Photography, by Ansel Adams

Kodak book is good

The old Kodak book is the best. It deals especially well with the traditional Wratten numbering system and specific spectrograms and applications.
Makers of modern glass filters still either use these numbers or tend to give comparison charts referencing them.
