A different Nikon lens question

With respect to optics and image produced, how might these lenses differ?:

NIKKOR f2.0 35 mm AI-s lens (manual focus)
NIKKOR f2.0 35 mm AF lens (auto focus)

I actually tested these two lenses out side by side. The older manual focus lens was sharper, had better contrast, but was not quite as good as the newer one when it came to flare caused by a strong light source within the picture frame. Since I very rarely shoot that way I went with the older manual lens. In fact my 35mm - f3.5 lens beat the newer lens too for sharpness and general contrast.
 
I just read the same exact thing in a book on Nikon that Eric notes.
