I have a Goerz Tenax Taro plate camera and I finally found out that it takes 9x14 holders. Are these holders very hard to find ?. I tried to alter a 10x15 holder to fit but it just doesn't work. Any help is appreciated.

9x14? There were 3¼x5¼ Postcard sized plate holders, The Goerz adverts I have list your camera as coming in two sized Quarter Plate 3¼"x4¼" or 10x15cm but there would have been a 9x12 version as well.

I'll look in my boxes of metal plate holders as there are some odd (non typical) sizes.

Ian

EDIT Have looked and nothing longer than 9x12 (except much narrower).

Think you are incorrect on your size.. double check, most likely 9x12 holders.

Hello Ian: I have tried both 9x12 and 10x15 holders and found that the 9x12 are too small and the 10x15 are just slightly too big. I found out about this size in a McKeown's guide and price list from 1996-97 and actually the 9x14 size makes sense. I cut a piece of sheet metal that is 3mm thick to the 9x14 dimensions and it fit perfectly. What I'm planning to do is find a roll film back from a 2x3 speed graphic and mount it centered on the piece of sheet metal and grind down the portions that would interfere with inserting the whole assembly on the camera and see how it works.

Hello Peter: I have double checked the sizes with both a couple of different 9x12 holders and they are too small to fit on the camera. I also tried a 10x15 holder and it is just a little too big to fit. I got the 9x14 info from a 1996-97 McKeown's price guide which stated that this model of camera came in 3 sizes to accept 2x3 inch,9x14 cm and 10x15 cm holders.

We know nothing about this, but its becoming very interesting... Hmmm.. so when you state:

Just curious, did you actually have a 9x12 holder to try,? Reason we ask, is one would think that a 9x12 holder would slide in, but would not be long enough and create a light leak. But the width would not be to small, and it would fit the camera that way. .

The Goerz catalogue is here. 9x12 or 10x15. May have a clue though . . . . . .

Someone on this forum and another person on a UK forum are having problems getting plate holders for Van Neck strut cameras, Peeling and Van Neck were the distributors in the UK for Goerz after WW1, when Goerz merged with Zeiss Ikon the Goerz- Anschutz was no longer available, however the camera continued as a Van Neck Press Camera or British-Anschutz, it's German made presumably using Goerz tooling etc but only marketed in the UK. While they are 9x12 cameras they need a much longer plate holder than other makes and I suspect yours does as well, this is because there's a velvet light trap at both ends where the holder slips in.
