For 7x17 I use:

600mm Fujinon C, f11.5, in Copal #3 shutter
450mm Nikkor-M Sinar f9, in Copal #3 shutter
300mm/12 inch Wide Angle Wray f6.3, barrel
300mm/12 inch Gold Rim Dagor f6.8, in #4 Ilex shutter
273mm/10 ¾ inch Wollensak f6.8, in Pi-Alphax shutter
250mm/10 inch Kodak Wide Field Ektar f6.3, in #5 Ilex shutter
I had a 210mm SSXL but felt it was too wide for my vision and sold it.

My most commonly used lens is the 300mm Dagor.

For 8x20:
420mm Apo-Nikor
600mm Apo Ronar

I have tried the 14" Kodak Commercial Ektar, but it will NOT cover 8x20.

If you like the 240mm on 4x10, the Nikkor 450mm M would be a great starting point for a 7x17/8x20 lens. It will cover with movements, is very sharp and contrasty, multicoated, in a modern shutter, takes commonly available 67mm filters and is very affordable.

All of these will work (yet some require 135mm filters, a large lens board, and a camera with more than just average bellows):
Grandagon 200 (7x17 only)
Rodenstock 300W
Rodenstock 300 Makro (closeup)
355 G-Claron (Schneider)
16" dagor in Ilex
432mm de Golden Busch
450 Fujinon
450M Nikor
550 Fine Art XXL
600 Fujinon
610 De Golden Busch
750 Germinar (Doktor)
30 inch RD Artar
800T Nikor
35 inch RD Artar
1000mm Germinar
40 inch Artar
1100mm Fine Art XXL
1200T Nikor

A few more:

305mm Computar

14" Goerz Trigor

360 f5.6 Symmar in Compound or Ilex No. 5 shutter - late samples in Copal No. 3 shutters were labeled 355mm with a max. aperture of 6.8 (limited by the "smaller" shutter) - not this refers to the single coated convertible Symmar, not the newer Symmar-S

The 360mm Rodenstock APO Gerogon covers 7x17. I've heard it also covers 8x20, but I haven't tried it.

Ditto for the 360mm W.A. APO Nikkor. I know it covers 7x17, but don't have an 8x20 to try it on. Note, this is the W.A. APO Nikkor, which is pretty hard to find. It's much less common than the standard 360mm APO Nikkor (which definitely won't cover 7x17/8x20).

In a longer lenses, the 760mm f14 APO Ronar Compact covers with ease, as does the 760mm f11 APO Nikkor.

The next will be a 305 or 355mm

The 305mm G Claron covers 7x17 with a bit to spare. I haven't tried it on 8x20. It may just cover. It's reasonably small, light (Coapl No. 1 shutter) easy to find and inexpensive.

The 305mm Computar will cover 8x20 with plenty to spare. Unfortunately, it's a lot harder to find and much more expensive then the 305mm G Claron (Quality Camera currently has one listed at $1995.00).

If you move up to 355mm/14" the options become more plentiful. The 355mm G Claron covers 8x20 easily as does the 360mm/355mm Convertible Symmar. The latter is big and heavy, but is available in shutter (Compound or Ilex No. 5 for early samples, Copal No. 3 later).

Anyone use a 600mm Boyer APO Saphir? I bought one in apprehension of going to 8x20, have any opinions? As soon as I get it mounted on 8x10 board, I'll test drive it. It's "supposed" to cover 12x20.

240mm Computar will also cover 7X17, barely, and 270mm Computar will cover with lots of movement. These are great wide angle lenses for the format if size and weight are a major consideration.

For my 8x20 I use the Gerogon 14" process lens. Nice wide angle and covers. I also use a Kodak Ektanon 21 1/4" which is very nice and the lenses were both very inexpensive. No shutters but at F-45 to F90 I don't need one.

Nikkor 450M on 8x20

I've read and reread the posts but I am getting conflicting reports on the Nikkor 450M being able to cover the full 8x20. Many claim that 11x14 is about it. I have located a 450M in a copal 3 shutter but I am concerned that it may not cover the 8x20. Any final definitive thoughts on this particular lens on the 8x20?

My Nikon 450M covers my 8 x 20 with room and my 305 G-Claron covers just to the corners, but is sharp across the image.

My Nikon 450M covers my 8 x 20 with room and my 305 G-Claron covers just to the corners, but is sharp across the image.

For some reason there appears to be rare situations that I have been aware of where participants here have indicated that their 450M lenses are exhibiting less than optimal coverage - specifically falling short of 8x20. This is rather rare so I am at a loss to explain this.

I have two of these lenses and they both cover on 8x20 and 11x14 with the regularly reported excessive coverage.

It is a always good idea with any ULF lens purchase to reserve sufficient time with the seller to put it on a lens board and check the coverage for your self.
