Hi community, I recently received an 8x10 Tachihara camera which i bought. It am totally mew to 8x10. I have a few questions,
The bellows close to the lens attachment part are slightly inverted. I found 1 tiny pin hole around the same area, any recommendations on blocking this without having to change the whole bellow?
The back screen is fogged so im not sure how im meant to see anything through it, i must be missing something in my thought process. Im going to buy a lens in the next month, but even with a lens its fogged so how do i focus?
It seems in pretty good condition other than the bellow part mentioned above.
Thank you for your time.

Black archival fabric tape used for book restoration or art can patch up pin holes. Possibly with a little help from a flexible acrylic black paint. If they are really pin hole sized, the black paint may be enough.

The rear matte screen is meant to focus on, not to see through. The lens forms an image on the surface like in an SLR. You look at the screen not through the lens.

The cheapskate repair consists of a piece of duct tape or bookbinder's tape, maybe with a bit of aluminum foil underneath. A somewhat more fancy repair is to use some kind of liquid rubber that you dab on the pinhole and then allow to dry.

The back screen is fogged

It's a ground glass so it's supposed to look milky. The frosted/rough side sits in the exact same place as the film surface when you insert a film holder. So the image projected on that side of the ground glass will be in the same spot as the film image, which means that the ground glass allows you to see precisely what the film will 'see' during exposure. You use this for composition and focus.

I'd suggest picking up a book about working with a view camera, or browse the web and go through the many tutorials (video and otherwise) on how to work with such a piece of equipment. The basic principles are really simple, but getting used to the workflow takes experience.

There are no silly questions - don't worry! It's all good; ask whatever you want and if the answer is obvious, that's only convenient, because it allows you to move on quickly to the next challenge that requires your focus.

As i only have enlargers that print up to 4x5 at the moment and i don’t think ill get an 8x10 enlarger due to there size, my plan is to be making contact prints from my 8x10 negatives (Color Negatives). I have a contact glass which i use to make contact from my other formats, but for 8x10 should i invest in some kind of a contact printing frame? Leaving the negative in the sleeve is most likely what ill do but any suggestions and tips id love to hear.
Thank you

"It am totally mew to 8x10."

I think you will find 8X10 more of a roar than a mew.😁

I believe that takes Sinar type 140x140mm lens boards, plus it looks like you have a Wista type adapter installed.

Thank you

The Linhof lens boards measure 96X99 mm, it looks like your adapter will take Linhof boards. Those are easy to find, either original Linhof or copies. 3D-printed boards are cheap and widely available.

Very nice camera! Everyone will have an opinion on the lens. I know in my own hands the 300mm gets the most use. If I were in Japan, for shure I'd be looking for Nikon and Fuji lenses for the camera.

It is nice that you have the two options for lensboard sizes...you might come across lenses for sale already in one of those two sized lensboards. My Fuji 300/5.6 has been my go-to since 1996, but the last few years my lighter and slightly wider Fuji 250/6.7 ends up on the camera more.

Enjoy!
