I had a very unfortunate thing happen today: while working at a rental darkroom I broke a piece of diffusion glass for an 8x10 negative carrier.

Of course, I’m being held responsible for this and was told they are very hard to find.

Where can I even start to look?

The enlarger is a Devere 8x10.

All the bad things always happen when your broke!

I don't know Devere. The old Elwood has a bit of a ground glass spot in the center of a ordinary sheet of glass, and a more substantial heat absorbing glass . If it's just for diffusion it's easy enough to make ground glass . Devere is a great machine, may require something specific from the UK.

De Vere negative carriers don't use "diffusion glass" in their negative carriers. I guess you mean anti-newton ring glass, Bob Carnie has posted recently in another thread about AN glass he may know where you can get some.

KHB Photografix in Canada are De Vere agents you could try asking them it's listed on their website CA$120. Alternatively if you have a piece if the broken glass try a framing supplier they often sell AN glass but you'd need to see if it's similar.

Focal Point Glass in Florida sells both plain and anti-Newton-ring glass properly beveled, or not, as required by the specific negative carrier or scanner. It can also supply custom-cut glass if needed for a specific application. It currently shows listings for plain and ANR glass for the large DeVere negative carriers.

Thanks everyone for the links!

I hope that’s what they were using. The people there were calling it “diffusion glass or opal glass. Is it possible they were using something they made custom? Or is it more likely they were just mistakenly calling it that and it’s really AN glass?

Diffusion glass would be frosted in appearance, and opal glass is white. What did the glass you broke look like? I believe it was most likely ANR glass if it was used in a negative carrier, which would make it clear.

Knight Optical here in the UK use the term "Anti-Newton Glass Diffusers" and state it's often used in enlargers and scanners. Not what we call a diffuser.

There is a diffuser in De Vere enlarger heads (except the condenser heads) in the light box of a Colour or B&W MG head, also in the base of a Cold Cathode head but it's not glass.

Thank you Ian for that hint at terminology. Also the term anti-reflection glass is used both for glass having a dichroic coating as glass that has been finely etched as used in framing.
