NASA used a modified Leica DSW700.

Here seen with the lid open scanning an original Apollo Panoramic Mapping Camera exposure:

That is not something we can complete with of course.

Andrew would you be willing to scan my copy?

I live in the netherlands, so I would prefer something closer.

Somewhere I did read that the optical resolution of the v750 is 2400dpi.

I heard that few flatbed scanners achieve more. To get 5000dpi you really need a drum, imacon or Leica scanner.

An old overhead projector with a roller feed might provide a good basis for setting up a camera based scanning routine.

What a cool neg, congratulations.

A crazy idea, perhaps, but what about unscrewing the lid on the V550 so that the neg can be repositioned and scanned bit by bit? Or won't the scanner work then? If it does, but if you can't place the lid back on (perhaps because the joints will cause marks on the neg for instance), then try finding something else that's large enough with a white flat clean surface to keep the neg in place.

Just trying to think a bit creatively here.

I was thinking about something like an Epson V550, but that would damage the film with its lid, and the film would not lay flat. As I do think the Epson lid overlaps the scanning glass on the edges.

Maybe I could "scan" it with my camera, but the quality would be terrible. I do not have a light table to lay it flat on.

A panorama of our scans!

Hans once tried to stitch the scans with photoshop, but that software did not work. I've been working on the 'Microsoft ICE 2.0' software for a few days now, and wanted to try something really big.

The software can theoretically stitch panoramas of several gigapixels gigapixels, as long as you wait long enough, and have enough disk space to make the process dumps.

I used the 13 JPGs scans from hans. I reduced the export picture to 42226x4550 pixels, the PNG file is 132 MB.

Do you know anybody with a cnc router?

Mount a dslr to the z azis, maybe with a macro extension for even more detail. Have the neg on a lightbox. Once focused, let the G-Code do its thing and watch as it takes as many pics as you want. Will need to reposition the neg and repeat unless you have a 79" long lightbox.

If the cnc owner doesn't program in G-Code, you'd need to jog the x and y axis plus fire the shutter each time. Tedious but doable.
