I have a couple of rolls of the Plus-X Aero 2402 and it is very similar to the Plus-X of old.

Type II perforated runs in my A70 Hassy 70mm backs. No rubber wheel required

My plan for this shooting year, Plus-X Pan (the original stuff), Kodak WL Surveillance Film, Agfa Aviphot 200 (Rollei 400s), and HP5 Plus. The Aviphot and the HP5+ are fresh film. I shoot a lot of expired film too, no real differences.

I have collected, cleaned and dusted, added blue tape, to my remaining stock of Kodak 70mm Cartridges. All of these cartridges are complete, including the silver inner clip. It is important that the film go completely into the exposed cartridge, without damaging the film transport. My plan is to load 24 exposures including header and leader, which I can develop on a Unicolor Uniroller, using my JOBO 2500 with modified 120 reels, or my Patterson which holds three 24 exp 70mm modifed reels. I bought up, cleaned up, and modified another Unicolor Uniroller, this one has continuous one way rotation.

Kodak Surveillance reminds me a lot of the older Tri-X emulsion.
The sun was just out of the frame upper left corner. The circular garden works well with the Hassy Fishy lens.

To illustrate this post, I took just a few pictures of my version of the magazine.

First the face with the Nikon data back. It is attached on just one side and rotates around that axis, the other side being attached through a sort of magnet.
The DIN connection to the body gets out of the bottom.


Second the right-hand side. Alas no film speed wheel for me. Frame number at the top, and cache over the DIN socket, probably so a remote can be used when the magazine connection occupes the DIN socket of the body.


The left-hand side, where what looks like a flash output is in fact the vacuum pump connector.

I've explored possibilities for machining wheels to convert Hasselblad A70 magazines to handle unperforated 70mm film. It looks like cost would be $20-$25 per wheel. Is anyone else interested in these? I could have a quantity made up and sell them at cost, but I'd only bother if there's enough demand to make it worthwhile. Are there 15 or 20 people out there who want one? Looking on Ebay at A70 auctions, they seem to sell fairly frequently and rapidly. Someone is buying them.

During Covid a fellow in the UK made a few copies and mailed to me, they were lost in the mail I'm afraid.

I would buy a few more for spares. I have a LOT of unperforated 70mm film. Even Tri-X Pro B&H was closing out at the time. And Efke 100 from J&C. I also had a Kiev88 that took Blad Backs. So I could shoot 70mm unperfed in the Hartblei with P6 lenses. What a hoot.

I'm interested in one wheel at this price point. I have low stock of unperforated 70mm film and I'm planning mostly to use it for slitting to narrower formats but, it's unique opportunity.
Did you try to contact fellow in UK, Nokton mentioned? Maybe he still has some spares?

Hi Goran,
Yep I bought it and had it, but the film counters were completely wonky and not working at all right, so I sent it back. It was an ordeal, but Ebay intervened, and I got my $$$ back. It was sold as working.

I have four A70 magazines and I'm sticking with those. Of course, if a Magazine 500 came along, in working condition and good price, I would again be tempted.

Cool thread. I don’t shoot enough 120 to justify any of those very interesting 70mm solutions but I enjoy looking at them.

Ooooo, no! Bummer! But, still you are the King! Yes, it's strange what can happen with so specialized equipment? Some rather bizarre malfunctions.
Nice presentation, Thank you for sharing it! Did not miss english audio part at all. I really liked that "knife" function. Exacta was the first to have it. It should use the same original Nickel cadmium battery as ELM ? Is battery holder aftermarket modification?
Looks like nicely made adapter!
On my ToDo list is to test my 2nd A70 magazine that come from full CLA service maybe 4-5 years ago. Ducking down! It's very large list!

Hi Goran,

As I recall, it ran on one or two EL/M Nicads. So I was pretty sure the 9V EL/M Battery Adapters would work too. I swear by those 9v units. Mine didn't make that nice "clicking" noise when the counter rotated, tried everything but no go. Who could repair such a specialized Gizmo? Good Luck There! A70's rock and are cheap and plentiful. With thinner stocks I can roll up to 200 exposures, of course, the film counter ends at 70..... LOL I have 500 feet of Plus-X Aero Recon that would fit 200X in a Kodak cassette? But how to develop it? Have to be in strips I imagine, in a tray?

120 Respooled 70mm Plus-X Aero 2402 Nik N Trik by Nokton48, on Flickr

This is a 120 roll of slit and re-spooled 70mm Kodak Plus-X Aerographic Fim 2402. I purchased five rolls from "Nik N Trik" in the UK, so loaded it into a Plaubel Makina 6x9cm roll back. Shot with Plaubel Makiflex with 270mm f5.5 Schneider Tele-Xenar in barrel. Film loaded into System 5 Paterson Tank with two 70mm reels, plus room for a roll of 35mm. D23 1:1 twelve miniutes at 68F.

The are some VERY fine negatives. The tonality is among the best, having processed many different types of 120 B&W recently. In fact, I am buying more 2402 Aerographic. I just received four rolls, each 40 feet of 2402. Cost was $150 for 160 feet total, I'm OK with that. Into the deep freeze it will go.

Need to find time to do a lot of printing!

I found some pictures I had saved from a Google image search some time ago, most probably an auction site. This one has both the data back and the film wheel inside (that mine does not..), plus some kind of on/off switch...

Custom Made Paterson 70mm Reel hold 220 length by Nokton48, on Flickr

I just tested this new to me Paterson custom made 70mm film reel, it holds a 220 length of 70mm film. No problem loading at all, although if it starts to slightly stick during loading, I simply pull the reels gently apart, while twisting and pulling the film onto the reel. It goes on smoothly and tightly. I am really pleased. I will be making two more custom 70mm Paterson reel sets, so stay tuned on how to make your own. Two sets of reels are required to make up the necessary parts for this thing.

Step 1 Parts Needed Paterson Single 70mm Reel by Nokton48, on Flickr

To make a Paterson 70mm reels for the small tank, you need: one complete reel (both sides) and a third reel side, the one that will fit tightly on the black central core. In addition to the core, you will need stainless steel metal screws #6x1/2", JB Weld, cross point screwdriver, and 1/8" drill bit and drill. I drilled out tiny guide holes with my dremel, to accurately and easily drill the screw holes. The plastic is rather slippery and tricky to drill



Step 2 Remove Spiral Material From Rotating Core by Nokton48, on Flickr

On the left, is the original reel. On the right, what you should end up with after modification. I also used a bench grinder to buzz down the right side a couple of milimeters, so there is plenty of room for the final adjustment and fitting.




Step 3 Attach Spiral with Ball Bearing to Black Central Core 3 SS screws by Nokton48, on Flickr

Make sure it is tight and square, then install three stainless steel screws.



Step 4 JB Weld Other Reel Tightly Squarely together Dry Overnight by Nokton48, on Flickr

Carefully JB Weld the Other Reel to the modded hacked central reel. It is mucho important that both sides of reels are square and not wobbly. Otherwise you will go nuts trying to get the roll to feed smoothly and without issues. Don't get any on the inside of the spirals, obviously. When this dries overnight, I'll finish the final assembly. Stay tuned.

Step 5 Use a dummy 220 70mm roll to set reel spacing perfectly by Nokton48, on Flickr

Assemble the reel, and use a 220 length of 70mm film to set the spacing between the two spirals. Do not be in a hurry, this one goes on smoothly without any issues whatsoever. Roll the complete dummy film all the way on to the reel, make sure you are well satisified how it is going

Step 6 Practice winding full roll onto reel until you are satisfied by Nokton48, on Flickr

When you are well satisfied that the roll goes completely smoothly onto the reel, remove the film carefully, and then drill and install the three stainless steel screws to lock everything down on the second spiral. After final assembly, make sure to try loading the roll a few more times to make sure all is good.

The reel is now ready for use in the small Paterson tank.
