Does anyone out there know where one can get 6x9cm B&W sheet film, maybe out of Europe somewhere? Is there such a thing as a sheet film cutter to cut down 4x5" sheet film to 6x9cm? I'm fine using 120 roll film with my super Technica but it would be nice to do some individual shots sometimes.

Hi,

really 6x9cm? Here in Germany Fotoimpex sells Adox CHS 100 II in 6.5x9cm.

You can get old expired one from ebay rather easily, but perhaps not cheaply. And Adox/Fotoimpex is the only one that actually makes it as a matter of routine. But as stated above, it is 6.5x9, never seen anything else so long as what you have are a standard "6x9" sheet film holders.

Good advice, 6.5x9cm was a standard size for Agfa APX 100.
I got two boxes from german Ebay last year, still in perfect condition.

@Dan McCabe I assume you have sheet film holder to utilize single sheets? Then processing is another matter. Can be developed in trays, but it all takes a set up / practice. Don't think of switching from roll film to single shots as a mere routine change, it isn't.

Yes, I have 6x9sheet film holders. I'm not switching to sheet film from roll film just trying to add to it as I used to do back in the 1960's and 70's. I have tray processed 4x5 for years. Thanks

OK, good, So one direct & fresh choice is the Adox CHS II 100 and that is the ONLY choice off the shelf. Expired is available any day from old (really old) stock whoever may have it for sale.

Ilford makes their FP4 available at those silly annuals, but price is plain exorbitant for that format and getting that is probably not any less of a hassle than asking anyone else to make one for you.

But Jens, 6.5 x 9 is larger than nominal 6 x 9. The two aren't the same.

See https://www.freestylephoto.biz/category/1-Film?attr[]=1-50

Neither size is exactly 6x9 cm, of course, and I’ve seen “6x9” abused to mean both. From a quick search, it looks like Linhof has historically made 6.5x9 holders, so that may be the more likely size for the OP’s Technika, but best to measure.

I don’t think 6.5x9 is regularly available at retail in the US anywhere, but I’d be glad to be wrong.

Is 2-1/4x3-1/4 close enough (5.7 x 8.3 <approx 6x9)? Freestyle carries some options. (edityed for 3-1/4 rather than 3-1/2)

https://www.freestylephoto.biz/category/2-Film/Black-and-White-Film?attr[]=1-50

This thread discusses 6x9, 6x9-1/2, and 2-1/4 x 3-1/4 sheet film concepts: https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/archive/index.php/t-110306.html

According to Dan Fromm (on link):

"2.25" x 3.25", loosely called 2x3, translates to 57.2 mm x 82.6 mm, rounded to three digits. It is a sheet film size. 6 x 9 cm is a poor metric approximation to 57 x 82."
And

There is a European cut film format 6.5 x 9 cm that is larger than 2x3. It is approximately 2.5" x 3.5"

There is ADOX at Freestyle BUT in 2.25 x 3.25 size which smaller than even 6x9. I checked ADOX and they indeed make it that way for apparently US market.

In the US we specify the full sheet size. European sheet film lists something repated to the ent image size. See the link I posted. 2-1/4 x 3-1/2 should be pretty close to 6x9 but maybe might need to be trimmed for length I suspect. Generally sheet film is 6-1/2x9 cm while roll film is 6x9 cm, but there may be other sizes. or 6-1/2x9 cm is a different size, but larger, so might be maskable.

Here is a relevant thread here:
https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/sheet-film-6-5x9-cm-actual-dimensions.179584/

Actuial size is 6.35 x 8.85 cm, so there is a little extra room in the holder and you might get 2-1/4x3-1/4 (I5.7cm x 8.3 cm) film in the frame.

Question is still open whether OP has a 6x9 cm sheet film holder (unlikely) or 6.5x9 cm. If 6x9 it might work directly. If 6.5x9, maksing may be required (or cut down larger sized film). I am curioius about this too because I have a folder that tkes 6.5x9 glass plates, but the plate holders also have a sheet film inserts.

Another relevant thread:

https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/6-5cm-x-9cm-film.175733/

tape 2-1/4x3-1/4 in place or cut a 5x7 in half for the approx. size (6.5x9)

Curses. 6 x 9 is a poor metric approximation to 2.25 inches 3.25 inches. Go on believing errors if you want to, but please don't spread them. See post #12 above.

I surely don’t spread wrong information, no idea where you got that impression. Read what I wrote again . ADOX makes sheet film in those 2 sizes and I merely quoted what Freestyle offers adding actual 6.5 x9 is offered as well but not by Freestyle. Can get it direct from Fotoimpex to anywhere in the World too.

post #12 looks deleted so tell me what it was and I will try to explain more accurately about film sizes.

Sixth Plate format is a stock size dry plate and sells well. The plates measure 63x88 mm and fit the Mamiya, Linhof, etc plate holders out there. Not film, but close enough if your holder can accommodate them (Linhof holders hold both film and plates). See the online shop at www.pictoriographica.com

Concerning "6x9" or "6.5x9"

I myself typically use "6x9" in any case, as the respective cameras typically were called over here "6x9" (even Linhof up to about 1960 had it about 6x9 for both camera and sheet film cassette). And these format sizs are nominal anyway.

Nominal, yes, but different and not interchangeable.

You refer to 2 different nominal sheet-film sizes? 6x9cm and 6.5x9cm

“6x9” is ambiguous; it can be as you use it, an approximation to nominal 6.5x9, but it also occurs as an approximation to the US size 2.25”x3.25”. This may not be a practical source of confusion in Europe, where the second size might be unheard of, but as Dan says, the two sizes both exist and are not the same.

So Dan referred to metrical versus imperial format:
thus 2.25”x3.25” versus 6.5x9cm

I use a Rolleicord cut film back to experiment with films now and again.
I simply cut 120 roll film into suitable lengths using a guillotine equipped with an adjustable stop.
Cotton gloves are essential when handling the film.
I use an old ensign Bakelite tank that takes film holders to stop the film curling up in the tank.
