I make 5x7s of my 35mm shots maybe twice a month.
I am set up to print bigger, but rarely do so. I just don’t know what to do with the big prints. They look cool but I can’t flip thru them like I can with 5x7s.

Yup. Exactly what you said. I print all small format on 5x7 paper.

4x6 is also nice, and for typical 35mm cameras, gives you full frame with relatively even borders.

5"x7" is a nice size for portraits, any larger gets to be too big on furniture and desks in particular. I like larger for walls, usually.

I get my color film printed on 4x6 paper. I like that too. 5x7 is just readily available and the boxes it comes in are nice for storage as well.

I’d print bigger more often if I had more wall space. Japanese apartments are small...

Something about the bigger prints always gets me. I think it's cause I'm only able to print them on occasion. To me, it's like magic when you print a beautiful image on 16x20 paper

Most of my printing recently has been on 5x7 paper. 4x5 contact prints in the center of 5x7 with white borders, which are some amazing looking prints. The other size I print is square image centered on 5x7 paper. I use speed easel so its like a 4.5x4.5 square on 5x7 paper.

On the other hand I find 8x10 the most inconvenient size. It’s too big to flip thru prints easily and too small for the wall. 11x14 and up I like on the wall.

I like 5x7 as well for prints.

In large format, it makes a nice contact print. The film is easier to handle than 8x10.

I can remember when customers would hesitate to order a 5x7 enlargement - because of how big and expensive they were!:D

I generally print most images from a roll at half that (3.5x5 with a quarter inch border, perfect aspect ratio for 35mm), and the more special images from a roll at 5x7. I just buy the 5x7 paper and cut it in half for the smaller prints.

careful, you might get a 5x7 camera and contact print them on 5x7 paper ( fun and ez ).

I typically print all my 35mm on 5x7; perfect size IMO. I do print larger formats to larger sizes, but those are for wall display or my portfolio. Contact print 8x10.

That’s dangerous!
Sounds awesome though! 5x7 wouldn’t even know where to start

I built myself a 5x7" camera last summer just because of 5x7" format  Shot many direct positives with it, priceless stuff. Also made few negatives but that is definely more trickier part (as I'm using self built shutter too).

But yes, 5x7" is really nice physical print format. I was on darkroom workshop this autumn and we made 30x40cm prints for a gallery show, started to really understand that some photos just work better printed large.

Ah, this is exactly what I used to do. I set my easel to give a one inch border and printed 135 negatives. It made beautiful prints. Sadly, the enlarger is in its box.

Too small for my taste, for prints. But then I don't print all my negatives, I'm very selective. I think I'd like 5x7 if I ever moved to large format though. At least contact prints are a possibility, and easier to handle and cheaper than 8x10.
I much prefer 6.5 X 8.5 (full plate, Ilford make paper that size) for small prints to leaf through or pin to the fridge door. Much more substantial than 5x7. Or 18 X 24 cm (7.5 X 9.5", the traditional European equivalent of the American 8x10 standard size).

+1 for the 7.5x9x5
It fits the 3x2 format so nicely. And cut in half it gives you a nice 5x7-ish size too

7x9.45" is pretty close to 8x10. 5x7" is pretty optimal for 135 film.

I made simple ratio calculation:

I thought this was going to be a thread on 5x7 film format, my favorite. I contact print them on 5x7 paper.

Timely thread, I've been thinking about starting to print 5x7. I normally print 8x10 and occasionally 11x14, but I like smaller prints in mats with large borders. Something about that look really draws me in.
