Am considering building a 5X12 but are film holders available as well as film. The last time I checked film was a special order situation.

New 5x12 film holders are available from S&S. AFAIK, 5x12 film is a special order item from Ilford - FP4+ and HP5+ only. I am unaware if Kodak offers this size on their special orders.

I had a 5X14 built with 6 holders by Chamonix because I have some 5 inch long roll aerial film to cut up. The idea started as 5X12 but grew to 5X14. You could querry Chamonix about the cost of just the holders in either 5X12 or 5X14 (now that they have patterns) and build your camera around the holders. If you didn't have the roll film though, you'd be cutting up a lot of 11X14 film which is expensive. (there was a url link here which no longer exists) about my new camera from a month or so ago.

Tillman Crane standardized on 5x12 for his work in Scotland. He uses a Canham camera, and holders from S&S. '

A couple of years ago he was using Bergger film; not sure if that is what he is still using.

Fred at the View Camera Store can get you some Ilford 5x12, check out this (there was a url link here which no longer exists) for links and info. It's a wonderful format. I made a 5x12 and 8 holders last year, let me know if you have any questions.

I built the filmholders for my 7x17 myself, so why not give it a try? It will save you 100s $.
I recently took some more detailed pictures of it for a German forum.

Everyones input is quite encouraging so here's another question:
Its the bellows, I originally planned on making the front standard square so I could use my B&J lens board with packard and JML 12" f9, but the rear standard would be very rectangular unless I made 14"X14" which would defeat my plan somewhat as I selected 5X12 over 7X17 for portability and ease of setup/use. So do you make the front standard the same ratio as the rear i.e. 2.4:1 for 5X12 for ease of construction of the bellows?

I made a compound tapered bellows, which was sort of a *!, but not impossible. You can use one of the regular bellows DIY plans like here, except that you have to continue the pleats thought the spacer to make them line up right. In essence this makes the patterns look reversed and that probably makes no sense at all. I'll see if I can draw a diagram of the patterns and post it.

How did you address the light-trap issue. It appears from the pictures that you have some kind of flap - can you provide more details on this aspect of your design?

What do you think of that JML lens? I have a 210mm and a 12", haven't done much with either one yet. Have you seen any signs of separation on the edges of the 12"? It's nice to know the 12" will cover 8x10 and obviously a lot more. What size Packard did you use?

I have a 10" JML Process lens I use on 5x12. Tons of room for movements, and it's sharp as a tack.

I used a slot cutter from Wolfcraft. It officially makes slots of 1.5mm / 2mm but the teeth are out of axis when you buy this thing. I flattened the teeth to get a 1mm slot.

Mounted on the drill press, with the workpiece in a cross vise and I build a box around the whole setup for safety. I didn't want to have this thing get loose from the drill press and fly around...

the light traps are currently in two versions. The one in the pictures is neoprene, weak enough to bend, stiff enough to get up again.
In another holder, I use a classic combination of felt and springs,
