I am very interested in trying 510-Pyro straight away. As I understand it, I can order the componants and mix it myself. I can order a kit from Artcraft or I can order 100ml of stock from the guy on eBay.

I don't want to mix from componant chemistry if I have a reasonably priced alternative. Artcraft doesn't list the kit on their site but indicates that they can prepare kits for just about anything but seems to be slow replying to e-mail. I don't have enough information to know if the eBay seller is offering a fair price or not.

Have other's had success in ordering the kit from Artcraft and if so, do you recall the price?

Hmm, the eBay seller doesn't have the Buy It Now price now.

Artcraft is a great company, but IIRC, it's a one-person operation. Mike will get back to you, but it can take a bit of time.

It was very easy to make - I don't know why you would be hesitant to mix your own. It also works quite well - Not as fine grain as P-cat but very easy to use and it is a faster developer.

Speed isn't an issue. I'm interested in 1:500, semi-stand.

I'm leaning toward ordering a kit from Artcraft.

It's a great developer for semi-stand, but I wouldn't dilute it more than 1:200. I worked out the dilutions and times I use with Steve Sherman during a workshop of his we hosted in Rockville. He thought my 510 negatives were perfect, which I consider the highest of praise. At 1:500 I get really weak shadows.

Here's the reply I got from Artcraft:

Multiply by 4 to make 400 ml
easier to measure and my scale only goes out to 1 decimal place, not 2

20 gr ascorbic acid - 2.00
40 grams pyro - 7.00
1 gram phenidone - 0.50

The TEA I would only sell by the pint, about 500 ml ±
that is $8.00

shipping on the above is $7

thanks,

-mj-

If you would like a larger size let me know

I'm confused by it and asked him for clarification. Does anyone know what the "multiply by 4" part is referring to? All of it? All but the TEA?

He's multiplied the numbers for 100ml of stock solution by 4, so the numbers he's quoting you are correct for 400ml of stock solution. I guess he's only able to sell the TEA by the pint minimum.

...and it would be a pain to measure 1/4 g of phenidone, which is such a small amount that you would have to worry about it sticking to the bag.

I see. So do I just disolve the chemicals in a portion of the TEA then add more TEA till I total 400ml?

400ml for $24.50 shipped, is a lot less expensive than my other quote.

Yes, dissolve the dry chemicals in 300ml of TEA, then add TEA to make a total solution volume of 400ml.

I buy my TEA (Triethanolamine) from The Chemistry Store: Triethanolamine $10.00/quart $16.81/gallon

Looks like I'll be using about $0.31 worth of developer a shot. I'm stoked.

Thanks for the info, folks.
