By the time you notice a slowing in the fixing rate the fixer has lost its usefulness to remove silver. Now if you are using a two bath system you can eke out a bit more life since the second bath removes any remaining silver left by the first. "I could see silver grains being accumulated." This should be the final tipoff that the fixer cannot hold any more silver and it is beginning to come out of solution. There is only one way to accurately determine the usefulness of a fixer and that is based on capacity. You need to keep track of just how much paper and film is run through it. Then do not ignore the manufacturers recommendations. As was mentioned by several posters this topic has been talked to death. Please heed their advice.
