You can buy a special cannister opening device, I'm sure; but I've always used a regular old bottle opener.

Thank you , the cassettes are not reusable , are they ? is there a way to recycle them?

Back in the day I used to load film , can one still buy those reusable cassettes and bulk 35mm film?

If you can pop the ends off the cartridges by pushing the cartridge down (against the long protruding end of the spool), then you can probably recycle the cartridge. Kodak and Ilford cartridges are certainly not recyclable (Ilford's once were; Kodak's probably too, but not for a long time).

Foma cartridges seem semi-reusable. Efke's seem reusable.

For the nonreusable ones I use a simple bottle opener, too. It works fine.

I know Kodak still has most of their popular B&W film on 100ft spools. I'd check Ebay or the classifieds here for a bulk loader and some reusable spools. Since very few people are still doing it, they go for practicly pennies.

Unfortunately in your profile you don't say where you are located and in this kind of thread location can be important in order to receive useful answers.

For what it is worth I understand that Ag Photographic in Birmingham in the U.K. can get Legacy film in bulk lengths. Legacy 100 and 400 is in fact Fuji Acros and Neopan 400. AgPhotographic is very competitive in terms of price. Use Google to get the site and try contacting it. The owner, Matt, is a subscriber here.

Fuji itself stopped selling it's film in bulk rolls a few years ago, the only way to get is under Freestyle's Legacy 100 and 400 brands.

I use a Simpsons beer bottle opener.
Its rather disconcerting to hear electronic belching noises inside a changing bag....:rolleyes:

Micro tools sells a "pull the leader out" device.

Porters camera sells a device similar to a can opener, but works better, and a wall mount one that works like a wall mount bottle opener.

Have all three and the leader puller is the worst. Something has changed because these used to work well, but i lost my $1 puller that worked 20 years ago, but is much harder to work now. I can not explain.

My cassets are Kalts and I use the tap technique or are Leica brass cassets that require nothing except fingers. They are the best by far.

About the leader puller device...
Don't you know how to do this using a short piece if film? I was shown how to do this years ago.

Get a short piece of 35mm film. Use scissors to round off the corners. Lick the end. Insert it into the cassette slit. Pull it out. The leader should come with it.

If this does not work the first few times, twist the cassette shaft a bit to reposition the leader. Try again.

I've used this method for years. I guess you could dip the end of the puller film in water instead of putting it in your mouth.

When they were still around the Ferrania films were available (as Arista) in 100ft lenghts. I think they stopped film production at the end of 2008. Freestyle's web site still shows some ISO100 in stock.

The last batch of FOMA film I got was in Ferania Cans and cassettes (even said C-41 when you peeled the label off!) so it looks like Foma got a closeout when getting supplies.

What's a church key? Maybe it's a Protestant thing, unknown to we Australian Irish Catholics.

BTW the local style bottle opener wouldn't open film canisters, the specialised and cheap one from Freestyle works a treat.
