3-way tripod head choices

I've been thinking about switching to a 3-way head. I'm using a modified Manfrotto 468MG right now, and while I haven't payed anything for it, I can't get new QR-plates for it either. It's a long story.

Anyway, I think I'll be happier using a 3-way head, the ball head is always moving in more than one direction it seems. I'd like to be able to lock it in either direction. When I'm using a tripod, I shoot slowly. Precision is more important than speed.

I will be using the head for my Zeiss Ikon and my Hasselblad. Right now I'm using a Man. 055 Pro tripod, but that may change. I'd like the head to be sturdy enough to hold a lightweight 4x5 inch, plus the aforementioned.

I've looked at Manfrotto but the 3-way heads are soooo heavy. Gitzo seems nice, but are they as good as they claim (and should be considering the cost)?

Any ideas?

I have the Manfrotto 056 three way head. This is a lightweight head designed for 3kg. I have used it with over 6kg, yes it was working hard, but it held magnificently.

I think this head is supposed to be mated with the 055 tripod.

I use it on my Benbo with a Shen Hao 4x5 and various lenses up to a 400 telephoto, doesn't move a millimetre.

It also works brilliantly with a Nikon F3 with drive attached and a 600mm lens. Generally a 600mm lens shows any flaws in your tripod and head in the stability department.

I haven't seen any other smallish 3 way head like this. The locking system isn't levers, which tend to stick out when you are trying to pack things small, instead they are 4 cornered contoured knobs which work well with or without gloves.

I just measured the circular base, it measures 60mm across with a cheap plastic ruler.

I just weighed the head, it comes in at 523gms.

I wouldn't call that heavy, not light either, but considering what you are trying to hold rigid, lightweight for the job.

I bought a Manfrotto 460 magnesium head (see link) to replace the heavier 029 head on my 055 tripod. It uses the smaller QR plate compared to the older hex plate and I have to say that the arrangement seems nowhere like as steady as the older system. I'd recommend you avoid it.

I'm using a Manfrotto RC141 head for the past 6-7 years and I'm very happy with it. Using with Minolta 800si+300mm lens and also Mamiya M645. Its on 055B legs and yes it is a little heavy to carry but I find that it is very stable.

I've looked at some of the new pistol grip ball and socket heads and I just can't take to them, I like being able to adjust each axis separately. Not sure if the RC141 is still available new.

Thanks for the tips everyone. The 056 might just be the one for me. One more question... Does anyone know if the Manfrotto 030HAS camera plate fits all Hasselblad models or only specific ones? I have a 503CX.
