Well, I just lucked into a 210mm G-Claron in a barrel that I want to put into a shutter to use with my 4X5. I am wondering if anyone can tell me if these happen to fit right into a Copal 1. It is serial number 12 870 867 and according to the Schneider web site that puts it in about 1975 or 1976. Given the date, I am assuming it is a plasmat, but I am also not sure about that. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks,

Paul.

Copal-1. Its threads are 39mm (the diameter of Leica thread but with a finer metric pitch). It won't, however, fit into all Copal-1 shutters but will work with most..

WRONG!

The Copal 1's front threads are female M40x0.75, the rears are female M36x0.75. The mounting threads are male M39x0.75.

Paul, if you ask the lens nicely, it will tell you whether it is a plasmat type or a dagor type. Count reflections from one cell. If it is a plasmat, you'll see four strong, one weak. If it is a dagor, you'll see two strong, two weak. The strong reflections are from air-glass interfaces, the weak from glass-cement-glass interfaces. In my limited experience, weak reflections can be hard to see.

If you decide to mount it in a copal number 1 shutter, I can email you a scan of the F stop scale.

Thanks Mark. I will mount it in anything I can get my grubby mitts on. My last choice would be a new Copal 1, I really don't relish the idea of spending nearly $300 on the shutter. I am hoping that something used, or perhaps a junk lens in a good shutter will show up on eBay and I will get that. I do have a feeling that I am going to have to be very patient.

Oh, and I counted reflections and am pretty sure it is a plasmat. I easily found four very strong reflections. It was a bit before I noticed one weak one, I am assuming I am missing the other because it is really weak.

It will fit right into a Copal 1. If the filter thread is 40.5mm it is the dagor type. If it's 49mm it is a plasmat. Stear clear of the Polaroid shutter from the 75mm f4.5 lens. It fits, but the aperture only opens to 15mm.

Sweet, it is the 49mm filter thread. That means that I can use the filters from my Pentax! Bonus!!! So, Jim, I am sure you are totally flush with wonderful cheap Copal 1 shutters since no one here is buying some barrel lenses from Kerry or anything, right?

Jim,

Just curious…… Which version do you prefer, the Dagor or the Plasmat?

Nope. I'm always beating the bushes looking for Copal 1 shutters. Although stuff on Ebay's gotten so soft I may not bother for a while. $104 bucks for my Caltar / Horseman 210 the other night. I'd have paid that much to get the shutter. grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Can't keep doing that.

Plasmat is sharper but dagor has nicer contrast. And these are so close it's actually a moot point. Both are superb. Probably my own funkiness that draws me to the older style.
