What would be the working distance from the subject if you were doing a normal half length portrait?

Wow, those people next to it must be awfully short.....a camera couldn't possibly be that big... I will have to say, though, that is the first "tripod" I've seen with storage! Amazing. I'd love to see Rob coat a plate that big!

Rob, as I'm sure you know, a lot depends upon the lens. With the two we mounted on that camera, a portrait distance for a bust is about 4 feet away.

The camera looks awesome!

What lens does one use on a camera that big?

Also, I have only heard of Ilford films in that size... or DIY plate

Rob, I don't know. Yes I reckon I could and get with S&S about a filmholder. A film version could possibly be made lighter as the frame doesn't have to support a huge glass plate.

Andrew, all the cameras that I make are for wet plate collodion, so they are DIY plates, either metal or glass.
