While you don't HAVE to print your own, it would be very instructive to have your own interpretation of the image at hand to compare against what the others have done.
As to the quantity, we're only talking about making four prints, three if you don't print your own.
Oh, I was making four prints each negative.
So Bill, are you giving the extras away?
I think though that most are likely to make at least two each of the others' negatives, so we can keep one for ourselves.
I found that making prints from four negatives (including my own) meant at least two, and maybe as many as four, fairly long printing sessions. So I put the project off a bit longer than I should have.
If I had a dedicated darkroom, and it was easier for me to break the project into smaller bites, it probably would have been done quicker.
I used to print other people's negatives all the time. I enjoy doing it - this Exchange has been fun! - but I'm out of practice.
Bill,
I guess I misunderstood the rules then. I thought we were supposed to make one print and to mail it back to the author of the negative. Oh well, next time I'll read more carefully...
Thank you Mike for your nice comment. Enjoy the print!
Eugene.
I've attempted printing the two negatives I've received thus far, without making a print I'm proud of.
Since this whole organized print/neg exchange started, I have not been motivated to do much photography at all, which makes it that much harder for me. Making the prints is one thing, but the negative has been the killer for me. The kind of photographs I like to make these days are very much in the moment, like portraits or urban landscapes, where the subject matter changes constantly. While I like to make pictures of vast landscapes too, I generally employ the Hasselblad for that type of activity. So I'm a bit stuck, I'm afraid.
It sounds easy to just load the camera and go out and shoot a few frames on a tripod. But I just cannot bring myself to sending out negatives that I wouldn't want to print myself... So far I've exposed three rolls of film for this exchange, and none of the negs made it past the trash bin.
Thomas,
If you are struggling so much (and I can commiserate, since I know I did), why not send three different negatives out this time around? I'm sure you could pick three perfect ones. Your correspondents can't see what the other ones are receiving, and at least it will get you out of a rut this time around. Once the pressure is off, you'll see that you will easily be able to fire off three identical ones for the next round
Eugene.
Well, the idea WAS to also scan and post the images you printed here, so we could all get the benefit of seeing the different interpretations.
Recieved Anikin's print of my neg - I really like the choice of paper and toner you went with for this image - something I probably wouldn't have thought of myself. I love it, thanks!
And there is really no way I could have scanned Paul's print. He'll know when he gets it. I'll pay more attention next
time. Promise!
It arrived this morning, and it makes me wonder how you managed to produce that print from a substantially larger negative.
