Anyone remember a pushing developer that came in small metalized plastic one use pouches. It was mixed at ~100F and also had rubbing alcohol.
I think it was called XP-1 or UD-1 something like that. It was pretty good stuff back then pushing tri-x to 1600 or 3200.

Thanks

Paul

Do we have to use this soup word? It’s not a savoury liquid food, it’s a developer.

The US Patent 4083722 for Perfection XR-1 gives two formulas one of which may be that of the commercial product. So you have the opportunity to mix your own.

We should always always refer to it as an exciting liquid, surely?

I think you'll find it a tantalizing gumbo of ingredients, with just a hint of Hydroquinone. Bon appetit.

You could always mix it up yourself

http://unblinkingeye.com/Articles/XR-1/xr-1.html

or this

PERFECTION XR-1 (Patent - W.A. Anneman, 1978)

Grams Per Liter
Ingredient A B

1-Phenyl-3-Pyrazolidone 1.50 1.75
Hydroquinone 0.50 0.25
P-Methylaminophenolsulfate 0.25 0.25
Sodium Sulfite 30.00 30.00
Borax 0.75 0.50
Water (Distilled) To make 1 liter

BTW, this is similar to Crawleys FX-8 which was;

Crawley's FX-8

Water 700.0 ml
Phenidone 0.25 g
Elon 1.5 g
Hydroquinone 5.0 g
Sod. Sulfite 100 g
Water to make 1.0 L

My own M-22 developer is s split stock that is similar ;

M-22
A

Water 750ml
Phenidone 1.5g
Elon 5.0g
Hydroquinone 10g
Sod. Metabisulfite 25g
Sod. Sulfite 50g
Water to make 1.0L

B

Water 750ml
Sod. Sulfite 50g
Borax 25g
Sod. Metaborate 5g
Water to make 1.0L

Dilute 1:1:8 for normal films

Soup is for eating. Photochemistry is for film and paper. Consuming photochemistry is so not recommended. Time for you to eat humble pie. Jes' sayin'

I'm with Clive, here.Soup? The term always irritates.Good luck with the thread, though.

Yes its a great word for us lab rats.

'Soup' works for me too. Going back to when every studio had a darkroom with 3 gallon tanks, the developer would be replenished and replenished and replenished. While still very active, it would have quite a murky and cloudy quality, hence the name. Now, being pedantic, surely a one shot developer will be somewhat clearer?

If we are talking about annoying photographic names, nothing is surely worse than calling a Hasselblad a 'Hassy!'

Soup sounds like poop.

Add photog to the list of annoying photographic names.

So a one-shot is more of a broth than a soup.

Yep Mike - I hate 'Hassy' as well - but then I also hate 'soup', 'stewing' film or paper, etc.

Bests,

David.

It was once a very common term, especially as you say for deep tank work. it'/ /till very apt today.

My pet hate Is recipe for a photographic formula, but then I have a scientific background.

No that's a bouillon.
Unless you're looking for a silver bullet developer, in which case perhaps it is a bullion ...

It's best fried with a little bit of butter and olive oil.
