Does anyone know of a reasonably light and compact 180mm lens that will cover 8x10 please ?

Black Dog,

The 180 is sort of tough because it is an "in between" focal length, and the WA Dagors and Wollensaks that cover were usually shorter. IIRC, the 190 wide field Ektar will cover with no movements although I wouldn't call it compact, and older non-American Dagors like the Zeiss f/9 Dagor around this size might cover with little or no movements stopped down. Keep in mind I haven't owned either of these.

Other options might be some of the protars with which I am not knowledgeable enough to even hazard a guess.

The "compact" requirement just about limits you to older lenses which are rare, rarer coated, and even more rare in good condition. Then you buy a shutter, have it mounted, have filter adaptors made, have lenscaps made...

Thanks!

Steve

I have an old 168mm uncoated Ser. III Dagor that covers 8x10" stopped down, but I've heard of others that don't cover, perhaps because they are different versions or because they have been mounted in a different way. A little shorter than you asked for, but it's compact and not too expensive if you can find one.

As Steve said, the 190 WF Ektar isn't terribly compact, but it covers.

Does it have to be 180? I have a Wollensak Ser III WA 6-1/4 that I love, but my heart belongs to my 210 Angulon. The 180 is smack dab in between. If you find anything juicy, I'd love to hear about it.

An angulon - not super - covers 105 degrees. The 165 will more than cover an 8X10, is small and compact and comes up about once a month on eBay selling for about $400+-. The 210 is much rarer, runs about $600 and will about cover a 12X20. I wouldn't call it compact but it is a great lens.

The Carl Zeiss Dagor 180mm f9 is supposed to be a very nice little lens for 8x10. Nice coverage and very sharp

very hard to find though

I've tried the 190 Ektar WA - zilch coverage and not a very nice look to the iamges - hated it.
