12x20 Movements

Because one wants to minimise cost and weight when ordering a custom built 12x20, which movements are absolutely essential to you irregardless of the cost or weight increase? Is there an alternative to geared movement? Thank you in advance

Francesco on my Korona I only have front tilt, back swing and back tilt, I have found these three movements all I need with 12x20. I rarely use the camera in vertical format, but in the few ocassions I have, the back swing was used as "tilt" to increase DOF. In it's normal panoramic configuration the front tilt is all I need and I rarely use back tilt.

Oh, sorry, I also have front rise, and I use this a lot, so whatever you do, get the front rise geared.

So to answer your question, if it was me I would have it done with front rise, front tilt, back swing and back tilt. Good luck!

The movements one uses depends on the usage of the camera. In keeping with the type of work that you presently do and that I do too, these are the movements that I think are important.

The movements that I think are vital in 12X20 are front and rear tilt. My camera has rear base tilt. I personally don't think that rear axis tilt is a big thing to me. However I find that front axis tilt is preferable to base tilt. The reason that I think tilt is so important is that as focal length of lenses increase depth of field decreases and tilt helps offset this.

My camera does have geared rear tilt. However I imagine that I could function without the geared function.

Next I would choose front rise/fall.

Beyond that I would choose front swing over rear swing if I had to make a choice. However swing on one or the other standards is nice to have.

These are the movements that I use most and in the order of their importance to me. Good luck...I imagine that you are looking forward to the day when this camera arrives.

If you are going to buy a camera this big and this expensive you might as well go the whole hog and not regret it later on for lack of moves. So what if you gain a couple of pounds for rear swing and geared tilt on the Wisner 12x20. This will save you later on when you really need it and makes the operation much nicer. Just so you know, Ron Wisner has created a new design Lightweight 12x20 model with a special back that really lightens the load over previous models. There are no springs on this back which makes it lighter, cheaper and less prone to light leaks than on the standard models.The 16x20 comes in at 25lbs.So the 12x20 will be under 20lbs. The 20x24 is under 40lbs.But this is in the developing stages for availability later this year. This is a totally new camera. I'm a Wisner user and retail dealer and am expecting a new 12x20p in this March with all the moves and rear gearing for anyone interested. This is the P model at about 20 lbs.
