Yes of course. Muphry's law at work again.

Really, I was interrupted by a phone call when I wrote this and cut short my proofreading. Hate the sin, not the sinner

Don't worry - I even had to think about how to spell success last night when asked by my Thai friend. (Now is it one "c" and two "s'"?, two "cs" and two "s'"? or one "c" and two "s'"? - should have seen the look on their face when I had to think about it for a while!!

And my Italian is woeful!!!!!

It's a personal vendetta I have with abbreviations. I work for a company that has 3,000 (yes, three thousand) abbreviations listed on a web site, just so everybody can know what others are talking about. It's insane.

lol I believe it.

I work in Aviation so everyday is a sea of abbreviations and initialisms. It can get really tedious but one I am guilty of using all the time is the airport codes for place names when typing. So much faster to use YYR, LHR, SEA, BKK etc.

'Shooting on a manual camera means you can't make a mistake' - What's this all about then?

You're not allowed to make crappy pictures with film, otherwise Kodak will revoke your right to buy their products.

It's called quality control!

How did it get named "chimping" anyway?? Have always wondered why this and not "editing" or "deleting" - after all they kinda make more sense to me.

To "chimp" is, I believe, a coined word - a construct of "check" and "image" and, I guess, "p"

Chimping comes from the sounds people tend to make when looking at the photos on the LCD - huh, ooh, etc... They sorta sound like chimps.

That's too bad. I thought Check Image and Pee was great, even if it's a little off color.

I know what you mean, I'm so guilty of that too. Especially in emails and text messaging.

My pet peeves (apart from apostrophe crimes) is people who use 'D*****L' or 'N***N' or 'C***N' or whatever... it smacks of insecurity and it's so childish.

Oh, and 'len' instead of 'lens'... aaaaaaargh!!!!!!

No, it comes from a Kodak television advertisement in which chimpanzees are using digital cameras and showing the screens to each other after every shot. Just like the digi-snapping crowd does today.

Not so prevalent now, but it used to get me when camera shops advertised chemistry instead of chemicals.

And yes, threemilesfinal, I'm often on short final for OZW.

That's right, an adult Chimp has a mentality of an eight year old human child.

plus, you need to bribe one with food before they will use a digital imaging device.

reply to OP: okay, my peeve is calling digital imaging 'photography.' it isn't photography. it's digital imaging. digital images are made and created by purely mathematical data and electronic sensors.

Abbreviations and acronyms are far less annoying if you speak their meaning out in your head when reading them or speaking them, as opposed to reading or speaking the acronym as a word itself. For instance, read, "Gimme two MGDs and an OE" as: "Gimme two Miller Genuine Drafts and an Olde English."

When I worked in submarines, we used acronyms constantly when writing logs or reading procedures. However, it was a "no no" to speak them out loud. Too much chance of confusion, especially over sound-powered phones, but even face to face. You would write or read "MCP," "MSRV," or "TG, but say "main coolant pump," "main steam root valve," or "turbine-generator."

No, that's done by people who don't want to spend the money on Photochop!
