Dear All,

I have noticed people have difficulty with certain specialist applications in sourcing 120 backing paper :

The question is do you want me to make this item available under the ULF run this year? if so, presumably I could do a 100' length.

Sorry to ask a question with a question, but I have not partook in ULF, my questuon is do you sell roll film so theoretically I could roll my own 120, if you supplied the paper and bulk rolls of film aptly sized on rolls to cut and tape to this paper (should you sell it)?

Dear Andy,

My advice is clearly DON'T DO IT:

Finishing ( or making 120 ) roll film is extremely difficult and requiries extreme precision, in addition handling unsupported film can build stress very easily and more importantly dust, 120 film is produced
( cut, joined, measured and taped to the backing automatically ) in a totally dust free environment, whilst the film itself has an anti-static coating outside of this automatic finishing environment do not even try it is my advice.

Yes! Thank you. Much appreciated. I'm finding that backing paper does wear out after 6+ uses. I took advantage of newcan1's link to Cartoon Colour Company to order backing paper, but I like to examine all options.

Great idea, but unfortunately I would be looking for a slightly wider roll, in slightly larger quantities. I'm assuming that you can't adjust the blades that easily, is that correct?

I think it sounds like a good idea to include this option in the ULF runs. I am not going to make roll film at this point in time, but I am entertaining the idea of doing so in the future.

I might be interested. Honestly, I think it will be harder to cut backing paper accurately from a 26in wide roll than it will be to slit the film from 70mm using a properly built slitter.

Pity you can't make 116 backing paper as well.

Simon, what width and length do slit to make 120 paper? Is it at all feasible to offer 'raw' rolls? Or a portion, thereof?

Ed

the hard to use sizes are the old roll film. in my life I helped a friend use the last roll of a couple of sizes in various box cameras. I think it was 122 that gave 6 shots of 4X5 inches and then there was 116, 616 which is just a bit wider than 120. Folks trying to make smaller sizes can possibly cut down used 120 paper, but Still might be interested in getting the paper without the tape on it, as that is always a bit of a weak spot.

116 and 122 sizes would be the most interesting, if it could be slit to widths other than the approximately 62mm of 120 film.

116 film is (of course) easy to respool with 70mm film.

122 needs about 92mm film, not at all easy to source. (I've slit some Cirkut film to make 122 color rolls.) If you could slit HP5+ and backing paper in the 122 size, that would be quite exciting to me (faster film for my Kodak Panoram 3A), although I bet you would get a very small number of orders. FP4+ would not be interesting, I have lots of frozen Verichrome Pan, as do probably most 122 fanatics.
