I thought for sure Cindy Sherman would be there. I don't know if I see that as satire. It seems plain old cynical. And then I ask what do they mean by ignore? Never look at again? Don't think about them? There are a host of photographers whose work bores me to tears, but I always look at new work of theirs if I come across it, and thoughts may or may not form. I think the article is good as a debate topic, but I wonder if they have a list of ten photographers that they think we should pay a lot of attention to. Then we could see where this is going. As it is, it's just a grumpy opinion piece meant to provoke.

All depends on how you like your canon cooked and served, I guess.

No mention of ruin porn or its progenitors. Does this mean I can shoot my beloved urban decay without being ridiculed?

I've never been one to like Shore's work but the example they showed actually looked good to me. I've always liked Adams. Go figure.

Ignore - as in "Don't emulate these folks - instead develop your own vision; you aren't going to do Adams/Arbus/HCB better than they did it themselves."

Good advice, if you ask me. Have to say I agree with everything I read in the article.

Especially good advice for LPV magazine, which seems full of photos by Eggelston/Shore/Arbus et. al. wannabe's.

That's exactly the way I received the message of the article.

Cheap criticism and a cheap shot. Even if the idea is not to copy the style of other photographers when everyone of those photographers were inspired by their peers. And if you are inspired by those on the list, you can't copy them, but you can learn a valuable lesson by trying.

That is what I love about today, lets just be grumpy and snarky because we are too cool to be affirmative and supportive. And there is nothing more enjoyable than tearing down our peers.

I thought for sure Cindy Sherman would be there . . .

Without reading all the posts this one brings to mind the colossal list we could make on this site - Cindy Sherman would not be there, as disregarding her work would not be satire but plain common sense

However, in a serious vein, St Ansel and the others did good work and if they are copied it is not their fault

Regarding monuments to critics it should be remembered that intelligent and understanding critical debate can be valuable in developing one's work - See Tony Barrett, CRITICIZING PHOTOGRAPHS, Mayfield 1990
