Your last too line ring true: Mortensen in comparison was just incompetent and way too late to the party. He was not the unsung and repressed genius some people are trying to make him into.

I find the SWC view finder good enough to properly crop the composition in the lens. Sometimes if the bottom of the composition is in question, turn the camera upside down. But still no reason for the pesky corners, I wish I could sand them off the view finder.

In that time period, body armor was not common nor very good. Definitely not near today's quality.

When taking photographs, sometimes accidents happen. #454 still stands. Photograph was never meant to replace everything that a paint brush could do; photography is its own media with its own forms and styles.

That is a bit better though than stopping the bullet with ones own body. Frankly I would rather that the camera stop the bullet then my body doing the heavy lifting in this case.
