I either use bounce flash or a plastic diffuser that came with my flash. Either of those will cut the unwanted harshness from the closest people without impacting the exposure as I use the flash's sensor for exposure control.

The second photograph is backlit with the hair highlights over exposed to bring out a halo effect. For us mortals several different exposures would be needed to achieve this effect.

Do not store lenses or cameras in leather cases. That goes for leather filter cases and view finders. Unfortunately some molds grow well in leather when the humidity is high.
