It does, because the assumption epson makes is that film will be scanned at higher resolutions than prints, so the dual-lens system puts the low-res focus at the platen and the higher res focus slightly up. The Betterscanning mount makes it easier to find the sweet spot.
...not engaged when placing the film directly on the platen (don't know whether this is true of the V500). And, as you rightly point out, Newton rings are almost a certainty.
With any decent Epson scanner, a betterscanning holder is, IMO, pretty much a necessity, so may as well buy one at the...
...roll, being more mindful of the agitation.
The negatives are quite flat in the scanner, since I scan them "bend upwards" with Betterscanning glass holders. It's difficult to see the band with just a loupe, but it does seem barely visible. It becomes worse as I dial up the contrast in post...
...upgraded software (which you should be able to upgrade separately anyway) and the V750 comes with the epson wet mount holder, but the betterscanning wet mount film holder is better anyway. I think that the V700 with the betterscanning film holder is the best way to go without spending big...
Yes the Better Scanning holders are an excellent value, I'm a happy customer as I have several of their products including the adjustable height wet mount holder and 120 holder which will work fine for smaller roll film sizes.

...I wish. I'd kinda like to keep people's heads in the picture if at all possible. ;) So I am toying with the idea of the holder from betterscanning.com that will allow me to use a holder with different size negs. And I can use it for my own medium format as well when I get to that point. It...
...down, putting the curl up, hoping that the sag would counteract the curl, helps a bit. I've ordered a replacement MF carrier from betterscanning.com, along with Anti Newton's Ring (ANR) glass. I hope this will do the job - after paying big bucks (for me) I want that big negative benefit...
I finally had my betterscanning film holder machined so it now fits three whole frames of 6x7 format per strip. All I had to do was mill away about 7mm of the frame opening towards the top of the holder (the direction where the scanner starts scanning from). The scanner didn't have a problem...
In my experience the Better Scanning products are well designed and durable and well priced.
But I'm biased since I'm a Better Scanning customer.
I've read Ctein's write up of the Scan Science products in Photo Technique magazine and I don't understand why he hasn't evaluated the Better...
Thank Kirk, is there a reason you think the betterscanning unit is better. It does look more flexible in its use as you can dry and wet mount using the one holder. I'm curious as to how the scanscience holder doesn't drip fluid on the scanner glass as there does not appear to be a bottom layer...
gosh, am I really seen as some sort of ogre? Well I like my better scanning holder too ... I bought it as I scan 6x12 and the standard holder won't do that.
its nicely made and simple to work with
:-)
Oops ;-) Well I'll elaborate on the betterscanning holders... they are beautifully made and certainly help a great deal with curvy negs but I just never had any improvement on the V700 for the vast majority of scans. I should be careful saying something like "I don't like them" and should have...
...(of 6x9) done for me with one (not driving one myself). Having spent some time tweaking hoders for Epsons and being the owner of a Betterscanning holder I can say that I don't think it will work much more magic on the Epson. As you identified yourself the Epson has a wide enough depth of...
...But every scan on the 9000 is better in some way.
I'd still LOVE to see a V800 or whatever with better holders (I don't like the betterscanning holders) and other tweaks to the optics. It would be sensational.
I saw a 5x4 today and who knows, I might sell the 9000 and my Hasselblad kit...
Hi
thanks for posting.
I see some sharpness in these 100% crops (and would be quite interested to see this in a print context) but I don't really see what you are referring to in the DR (I assume Dynamic Range) differences here. Could you perhaps explain a little, as I see them having...
...examples are 100% crops from a 6x6 neg and were simply the 'best I could get' from each scanner. Epson is with Silverfast ai and the betterscanning holder, and Nikon using Nikon Scan and glass holder.

The Epson is supreme value for money and really great to use, but the...
Like new! I have an Epson V700 but it's good for other scanners too. I used it once and decided i didn't need it. This is the dry and fluid mount version (with Anti-Newton Ring glass) with 4 uncut light masks. http://www.betterscanning.com/scanning/mstation.html

...but it's certainly a time waster. I intend eventually on purchasing a 9000, and not looking forward to having to rescan everything. No betterscanning holder, wet mount or glass turns the V700 into anything other than a $800 scanner - it's good for the price of course, but nothing more...
I only have the Betterscanning ANR glass for 35mm.It fits in the supplied 35mm plastic film holder,ie the film is IIRC about 3mm above the glass. After processing I place the film in the holder and the ANR glass on top.Generally this is not heavy enough to flatten the curl across the width so I...
In have no personal experience with this (although I do have the betterscanning AN glass at home) but I'd suggest they wouldn't make this glass if it didn't do its job. Maybe others could share their experience ...
Assuming you have a flat bed scanner: If you have a means to hold the film...
...have the holders for my progression of epson scanners (3200, 4870, 4990) and see iterative improvement over the years. I also have the betterscanning holder to make comparisons with too.
As the job is to hold film (and not some bucking steer) I guess that the comments are largely a...
...scanner is only capable of resolving something like 2400 anyway, so you
will generate a hugh file for not much return. Using a BetterScanning film
holder and lower resolutions yields fine results for me. Bottom line: try
scanning 6x6 film at both 6400 and lower resolutions and...
...to get better results, and maybe the normal box included film holder is not ideal for scanning for 120mm, i've bought the holder from betterscanning and really i didn't know how to use it.
So i will give another test with "auto" settings if i can do that and see how it will perform at the end.
...then, so i ask you here, what do you recommend or suggest to do with this scanner[V750] to have better results?
Note: I have BetterScanning 120 holder + ANR, and i don't know how to use it though, also i read here and many websites about fluid[wet] mounting, what is that and how it will...
...You can also dry mount the negative to the glass, but if so mount it with the emulsion facing the anti-glare side of the glass.
What I have described above works in theory like the Betterscanning mount, which has a more sophisticated method of testing for position of best focus.
