For 120 film, the betterscanning holder with ANR glass is rock solid and well worth the money since the Epson 120 holder can't hold some films flat. Besides, it is easier to get the focus adjusted to precisely the right height.
For 35mm film the Epson holder is a little more convenient...
Hi there,
what are the options out there for upgrading the stock film holders that came with my v700? Apparently betterscanning no longer supplies the film holder with T locks - you have to buy the ANR glass which makes them a fair bit more expensive. Any other options? Can anyone who...
...it flat and it's a bit of a pain to avoid dust and fingerprints. When I get this all sorted out I might consider investing in the betterscanning custom holders but for only 22 rolls a year, I should probably just suck it up and do it like I've been doing.
I just wish everything in...
...as if you do the same thing on the latest entry-level dslr.
A thousand dollars later, and I've got myself an epson v750, silverfast, a betterscanning holder, and enough lumina-fluid to last a decade. You could do the same, or get yourself a darkroom setup, or post it to a shop that knows how...
Plustek Opticfilm 120.
While I don't use a macro lens and a DSLR, it isn't true at all that it's the same as shooting with a DSLR. The film image, by the time it even makes it to an enlarger or in front of a sensor has already gone through multiple stages which, as the sum of their parts...
For scanning (which we're not allowed to talk about around here so I'll keep it short), you can't go past an Epson v700/750, Betterscanning holder, and Kami or Lumina fluid (Lumina is kind of mandatory unless you live in the US/EU, Kami won't ship to us here in aus).
Just don't do what I see a...
Brand new Lomo Digitaliza 120, ideal for the Epson flatbeds. A very popular alternative to the Betterscanning holders.
I've just bought the V600 and for my purposes, I'm satisfied with the Epson mask. The Digitaliza arrived a few days after the scanner, and hasn't been opened.
£30 including...
...cut off the first four frames and just done a scan. Digital ICE did something really weird.. (see attachment). I assume that was it's attempt to remove dust.
So I've turned off ICE and this time it came out okay.
I'm certainly going to keep an eye out for a BetterScanning holder being sold.
...thingy
keep your negatives clean storage sheets
watch out for gaseous discharge that tends to fog the inside of V series scanners
consider betterscanning ANR scanning holders
architect some kind of archival storage system, digital contacts are probably not a bad idea either.
Have fun!
...the glass I couldn't reach it with the highest extended feet provided, and the third was just about right, I also switched to the betterscanning holders with fully adjustable height, which helped dial in precise image in 120 at least.
But yea, I don't like charts I like full 100% resolution...
One super clean, barely used BetterScanning Medium Format Film Holder for the Canon series scanners. $65 shipped to you in the US.
See it here.
Let me know if you have any questions.
The Epson 4990 and betterscanning kit have been SOLD locally. (Thanks Missi!) The camera is now being offered with the Rodenstock 150mm lens mentioned above (mounted), and an Epson 2450 scanner (not as good as the 4990 and no betterscanning kit, but good enough for proofs) including the 4x5...
...and 8x10 film area guide are all stored in a plastic box to keep them from getting lost or cracked.
This kit also includes the Betterscanning Variable Height Mounting Station (see link below) for the Epson 4990 scanner that lets you precisely adjust the plane of focus. These scanners have...
Of course there's nothing to be done about shipping when it's international and long distance.
I suspect many of us who are buying these already shoot 4x5 (or 5x4 if you prefer...) and so already have most of the items. I already have the lens, the film holders, 4x5 film in the fridge, light...
...now i'll get a 3-reel to fit the mod54 in).
(I'm not counting the $250 i also just spent on getting scanning fluid to Aus, nor the betterscanning mount or the v750 I already bought last year)
Still, for less than $1000 that's a damn nice setup, and would probably take a lot nicer images...
I have a V700 right now, running nicely under linux except for the fact that there is no betterscanning holder for 35mm strips and the V700 which makes my 35mm scans a bit soft. I probably got a bit spoiled by vuescan because they seem to support a very large number of scanners under linux, but...
I'm offering practically new negative holder from Betterscanning for Epson V500 - variable height with ANR glass - complete, only tried out once, realized I hate scanning negatives. Paid 100USD for it to get it overseas, would like to get that back, OBO. I'll ship it EU-wide for free.
Also I...
...narrower than normal, and drops down through the mount) while an FP4+ / 120 keeps curling up.
I have invested some $$ and purchased a Betterscanning 4X5 mount, with an ANR glass plate that does not produce Newton rings. Huge improvement, after spending a couple of hours defining the best...
The Bayer array certainly concerns me as a possible problem area. For black and white negatives it seems to be a non issue, but for color I expected to see some issues. In practice I am not finding a problem with color slide film. I think the details on the film aren't small enough that it's...
...good enough for web use of 35mm. When I scan medium format or large format, I think the Epson ends up ahead, especially when I use the betterscanning mounting station and do a careful scan.
Again, for web use, the D800 would do just fine even with these larger formats. It all depends on...
...professional scanning service (drum or hasselblad scan, for example) for those images you want to digitally print large.
The flatbed is fine for web images, but for highest quality you should read the information on this forum regarding tuning the focus with things like the betterscanning...
In 35mm?
Sometimes I have to use 2 ANR glass pieces of 120size just to get the 35mm flat enough because its so curly, you must live on Arizona or someplace with low humidity...
sometimes with the OEM holders the film literally pops out mid way from the curl, it's really bad...

I have betterscanning holders with and without ANR glass, and I have the old-style Minolta holders with bars, and I don't see an advantage for one over the other, except that ANR glass introduces extra dust.
...Epson, the film re-curls while its being scanned which can introduce movement and grain blur.
If you haven't seen just how flat the betterscanning holders get film, then you probably don't realize how perfectly flat you can get it. And the curl not only affects the sharpness of the grain but...
...which position they were all too high.
And the film was ALWAYS bent / curved and never fully flat. They just aren't as good as the betterscanning holders is all I meant which you can completely adjust the height not just 3 positions but ANY height you want AND the ANR glass keeps the film...
Those "adjustable" feet aren't actually adjustable, they come out but they don't really change height.
