I like my Nikon FE so much that currently is my only Nikon. I've sold many of my nikons including a rather rare F2SB, F3, rare F3P, and other typical Nikons (FM2, FG, Nikomats). Only the FE stayed. I do have a small annoyance with the way the advance lever also powers the camera -- i've lost a...

...leaf shutter ever put on a compact camera.
Do you see a pattern here? But some of my favorite cameras are Olympus: Trip 35, Pen S, Pen W.
Nikon F3. Lol. It could have been a great machine. I could write a book on all that's wrong on that camera. I've already written enough here.
Nikon...
I disagree. Pentax has an excellent exposure compensation dial. MUCH better than the one in the Nikons (FE2, FE, F3) and the Canons (A-1, F-1N) in the sense that it can be turned by hand and set by "feel" without removing your eye from the finder.
It is really easy to apply +1, +2 (or -1, -2)...
...streets with just my eye as an estimator of exposure?
Besides, when I was using slides I could get consistently perfect exposure with the Nikon F3 quasi-partial meter, the A-1 centerweighted meter, and any medium format camera with my handheld meters. So why should I bother with multi-spot...
...auto exposure of the Nikon FE without the goofy FE shutter lock, with much better build quality. It has the TTL OTF flash metering of the Nikon F3 without the F3's ills. It has a viewfinder image almost as good as the one in the New F-1, plus the same range of mechanical speeds. It has the...
...years of reading you extolling the virtues of the mighty LX.
My short comparison to the previous pro SLRs i liked: Canon New F-1, F-1 and Nikon F3, F2SB. But in particular, compared to the New F-1, since it was my pick for "favorite pro 35mm SLR":
Big Pros
- Significantly lighter and...
...P6x7 system.
I wonder which body part to store the battery in so it stays hot? Discuss...
My point was that Nikon did well in integrating the F3 motor power to the camera power. While Canon on the F-1N has a silly accessory that couples the motor power to the camera power by simulating a...
This is a very good feature of the F3 that I overlooked. The Canon guys made the silly mistake of not including this feature on the F-1N, which supposedly is as easy as simply adding just another electronic pin on the bottom of the body.
Of course.
Last year I sold my last F3.
Yesterday I sold my F2SB, my last F2. I loved it, but it was very heavy...
I'm keeping my mint FE as my sole Nikon camera for now. The FE will stay.
Note that they are very accurate through most of the range if recalibrated. You had meters that were off-calibration. Sometimes the CdS cells need replacement, but that's rare with the DP-11 and even with the DP-1.
Internally there are pots for re-calibration.
Great review of F3 vs F2, though.
I just cross my fingers and wait until @Les Sarile makes a comparison between the meter display of his F3, F2AS, FE, New F-1 and LX, to illustrate how clear or easy to see is each metering display.
...Priority is a HUGE advantage, that's why I choose the Nikon FE over the FM for example.
My point, and I hope it hasn't been lost, is that the F3 could have been a much better product. It seems to have been designed by a different Nikon team (to the F2 and other products), because of some...
...LX have more mechanical speeds available.
Correct, I stand corrected. Thanks.
So, we agree, right? Try the F2 trigger.
Well, you need to try a late-production F2. I have fitted a F3 focusing screen on my F2 and yes, it's brighter than the same sceen on a F3.
Yes it does have multi-exposure.
...didn't keep the shutter lock and self timer activation on the same location than in the F2?!)
- Hot shoe on prisms (versus only available for the F3 on the ultra expensive prism of the F3P)
- Meter relies on glass FRE resistor (versus bomb-proof meter system on the F-1N)
- No button or...
The list of things that are crippled on the F3 cs F2 can be very long...
- Awful "+/-" tiny meter display (instead of extremely clear LEDs or needles)
- Tiny, awful LED display (instead of clear numbers)
- Only two mechanical speeds. No battery tester to see how much you've left (unlike Canon...
My F2S with upgraded screen has a brighter, clearer viewfinder than the F3 (regular finder) and F3P (with titanium HP finder) i had. The finder on the F2SB and AS is superior to the aforementioned F3 finders.
The need for a semi-transparent mirror on the F3 impairs the potential for viewfinder...
If you want to really take high image quality, you'll first need to make sure you're getting top quality scanning (or printing)
The 50/1.8 long-nose Nikkor is IMO pretty much unbeatable. Made in japan "Zeiss" is not comparable to real Zeiss IMO.
Some people are suggesting Leica R lenses...
They never had "100%" finder, they had, as the official F3 and F2 specification say, "virtually 100%". They can't really guarantee 100%, that would be very difficult to achieve.
The other pro cameras are for practical purposes, similar, for example,"97%" (Canon F-1New and original F-1), "98%...
...i'm sure the best way to experience "joie de vivre" is shooting in low light, trying to look at the microscopic "+/-" meter display on the Nikon F3 and trying to reach for the viewfinder illuminator button with your right pinky finger, while keeping pushed the shutter button with your index...
...it's very reliable after it has gone through complete service by a technician.
The F2 is a boat anchor compared to the OM cameras or the MX. The F3 is a bit lighter but still heavier and bigger than those.
If you want a light and more or less compact camera, or the most closest Nikon...
I love the F-1 New, however if the OP is looking for light weight or small size, stay away from the F-1 New, it is for bodybuilders. The MX is truly a portable, light machine and they're nice in every regard.
Your point is that you need something fast and versatile for action shoots like kids, guitarists etc.
Well, i understand your point but if that's what you want to shoot, then the F4 isn't a good choice either. You could carry a Canon EOS 5, you will need no motor-drive, even the flash is...
I also had a F3P briefly. Liked the titanium prism + hot shoe.
But sadly it has the same flaws of the F3: an inferior quality viewfinder image (compared to the later F2 cameras), tiny hard to read shutter speed, IMPOSSIBLY tiny "+/-" meter display that is a big insult to common sense, useless...
...35mm cameras:
In no particular order:
Leicaflex, any model (Original, SL, or SL2)
Nikon F2SB or F2AS
Canon New F-1
Canon F-1
And, probably (though i've never found one)
Alpa 9d or 11si
Honorable mentions
Pentax LX
Pentax MX
Minolta XK
Leica R3
Minolta XE
Nikon F3
Nikon F
Exakta Varex
Yes.
As pointed out, the F3 screen has an acrylic screen and a glass lens, the ones on the FE/FM series are only a piece of acrylic.
I had the F3 with the non-HP finder, then the one with the HP finder and also the rather rare F3P camera which has a titanium HP finder with hotshoe.
I...
Most regrets i had with the Nikon F3.
I've bought a Nikon F3 camera three times in my life -- three times I bought a F3, to then find out i don't like it and thus sell it, to later buying a F3 again because it looks so cool and it's so desirable by everybody.
I have never been completely happy...
Yes, the lens will be compatible as long as it has an aperture ring. The "G" series autofocus lenses are NOT compatible: they don't have an aperture ring.
The meter will "couple" with the camera, making metering easier, if you use a lens with the "rabbit ear", which is an "aperture coupling...
