...a difference if you're working in BW & honestly i don't remember any problem shooting transparency film with them in the '70s.
..the 40 Summicron C is a fine lens..(as are other Summicrons from any era), and good value for the money (in the $500 USD range)
The Heliar does have a vintage vibe...
Minolta M-Rokkor CLE f2. Excellent lens with much better coatings than the Leica Summicron 40mm.
Voigtlander Heliar 40 f2.8. Tiny and sharp, with "vintage lens" user interface.
Voigtlander Nokton 40 f1.4. My least favorite of the three, the out of focus rendering is nervous & busy.
Nokton 40/1.4 is big and heavy if Summicron 50 is gargantuan? 😀
(picture taken from this review that compares Nokton 40/1.4 with Summicron-C 40/2)
I'd think that 40.5mm (M-Rokkor) filters would be easier to find than Series 5.5 that Summmicron-C 40 uses.
I've used and owned the VC Nokton 40 1.4 (on an M4P), Summicron C 40 (had several), Rokkor M 40, Heliar 40 2.8
Currently using the Summicron C 40....a stellar lens.
I didn't care for the size/heft of the 1.4 on the CL...it's big & awkward.
The Heliar is thoroughly modern in character...but the...
I had the Leica 40mm Summicron CL and it performed on par with the 35mm Summicron v3 which I also had. Selling lenses to fund another always ended with regret for me. Anyway now I have the 40mm Rokkor CLE version which is same as a CL but multicoated.
...interchangeable.
The Cron is lower in contrast, but very sharp across the entire field, even at f2. Out of focus areas have a distinctive Summicron-look (not super smooth, but not unpleasant). Quick focusing.
The Summilux is centrally sharp, with a drop-off in the mid-field. It gets sharper...
A bit of a stupid question. I recently picked up a 50mm Summilux-R, which might make my 50mm Summicron-R redundant. You sometimes read "you never sell a Leica lens" on forums. The -cron might net me 300 EUR which I dont need urgently.
Thoughts?
Leica MP, Tri-X (24 exposure roll I like shorter rolls) 50mm Summicron. XTOL stock. I've yet to print. I love this camera/Lens/film/developer combination 😊
Developed the film yesterday, need to get printing. Weather has been amazing (good)!
I'm up too late again 🙄
The original Leica 90/2 Summicron lens, made for the M-series cameras through the 1970s, will cover 6x6cm. It was used on some aerial cameras (Vinten, I think) that used 70mm long rolls. It was an extremely high-resolution optic when used that way, but I have no idea how you could adapt one to a...
Since you seem to have both lenses, why don‘t you just do exactly that?
Take a picture with the 50 cron, swap to the zoom set to 50mm, take the same picture again.
Do it once at the same aperture and once where you use the cron at f/2.
I’ve done exactly that with many Leica R lenses (not the...
I have bought the (3rd gen) Summicron already.
I am looking at Reddit and Flicks posts of people who used the 28-70mm, and it is interesting to see how one perceives a photograph when knowing or now knowing with which gear it was made.
I am not a pixel peeper but it would be great to compare...
...a big surprise if there was any chance you would ever ask "this shot has such a great look, I must own that lens, which one was it?"
In a word: Get the Summicron. Or if using any other system look on flickr or wherever what pictures from the best primes for this system look like and get...
...produce the most interesting work.
Unloved = guilt‑free use
The 28–70 and similar Leica R zooms never carried the cult mystique of Summicrons or Elmarits. That means you don’t feel like you’re “wasting” their magic if you shoot graffiti, construction sites, or a cluttered market. You just...
...talking to to reinforce that it's not they or the lens that gives a photograph 'character' but it's the photographer. So they can make-do with their 50mm Summicron between them, I'm not having the R9 getting ideas above it's station and looking down on the poor R-E as undeserving of a Summilux.
Lens price increase could reflect the fact that many are buying R-lenses to use with adapters on cameras like my Sony 7RII. One of the very best lenses for my Leica-R adapter on my Sony is the old 180mm f2.8. It absolutely amazed me. Heavy, but perfect optically. It also works just peachy on...
...of the Leica ecosystem — seem to be picking up in price. Not just collector-condition R6.2s, but even lenses like the 135 Elmarit or 50 Summicron-R now command figures that would have been unthinkable a few years ago.
Could be wishful thinking on Wetzlar’s part — their way of softly...
Yes, I had a Canon P and loved that camera with its 50mm f1.8 lens. The Canon 7s I had was nice too and it had a built in meter, but I preferred the Canon P for being user friendly. Canon also had a add-on meter for these Canon cameras that worked reasonably well. Another nice camera with a...
...to choose from).
Finally, the Auto shutter speed Minolta CLE is nice when properly serviced. A fun camera but know that they're considered 'Light Duty' cameras.
Better to go with a low-mileage fully manual Leica CL. Fortunately they're typically married to a wonderful 40mm f/2 Summicron lens...👀
A Summicron Asph about 20 years ago where some internal piece broke and the aperture just went round and round, like a carousel. The well known Leica tech who fixed it in the US claimed that new leica lenses are junk because they're all plastic inside. She's know for her hyperbole, but you...
