Nah. Scanner technology hasn't changed in the last 10+ years except for the incorporation of LED lights instead of fluorescent tubes. Even that didn't provide much of an advantage other than shorter warmup times. I use an Epson 4990, which was the model prior to the V700. There's nothing the...
...V750, V800 and V850 series, are there any REAL or important differences? These are the scanners that seem to be more current and have Betterscanning mounts - in the event you get finnicky.
I think I've read that the V800 and V850 don't really add anything the V700/V750 weren't already doing...
I use the BetterScanning holder for 120 and anti-Newton's Rings glass on my Epson 700.While the setup is fiddly the improvement in sharpness is worth the effort. The ANR glass helps compensate for the "floppiness" of 120 film.
I didn't make myself clear..oops. The Betterscanning holders won't allow 35mm to produce results rivaling Nikon however in my experience they can lead to prints rivaling 120 in medium size optical enlargement (e.g. 16X16).
...like Rodinal/stand. If i want fine grain I use fine grain film. Both my Nikon V and for 120 etc my even more ancient Epson 3200 with Betterscanning neg holders make those distinctions nicely. I use NIK Silver Efex, but have never needed to. Stained negs sometimes contribute tonality so those...
I went with the Betterscanning holders and the anti-newton glass because while 120 should in theory be flat, it rarely is, and the anti-newton glass helps a LOT with that.
I have heard good things about the Betterscanning film holders and almost bought one. Before I did I did a bunch of testing with my Epson holders that came with my 750 Pro scanner first. I found that the Epson film holders were dead on much to my amazement, and relief. Money saved!

Each level of betterscanning film holder results in higher detail resolution. I bought all of them and tested.
The "adjusting" carrier is best, but requires some work to squeeze the best from it. The least expensive betterscanning carrier improves resolution over...
Regarding the Plustek OpticFilm 120, the film holders for this scanner are simply amazing. Incredibly easy to use, I can normally load film into them in just 5-10 seconds. The film is held perfectly flat, even if it is heavily curled. It is hard to imagine better film holders than what comes...
I agree it's a great scanner, though I actually like the film holders since they're so easy to use. I found they work as well as the betterscanning holder, but it may be because I flatten my negatives well and got lucky with the focus zone of my scanner.
I tried using a CLA'd coolscan 9000 and...
I bought everything Betterscanning made a few years ago for ancient Epson 3200...with 35mm the most basic holder was a little better sharpness-wise than Epson's basic. I saw no (zero) advantage with anti-newton (which I relied on with my enlarger)...but I saw a distinct sh"carpness advantage...
...on the glass in the holder. I measured both a cardboard and plastic slide mount and they were both 1mm so the film was 1mm above the glass. I don't know how that compares to the betterscanning holders but if you want to try a low cost solution try a slide mount.

...the negative on both sides and does a pretty good job of keeping the negatives flat for me.
It’s a much cheaper solution than the betterscanning holder — I bought mine used for cheap.
As for the scanning software, I find the EpsonScan software to be the best. I turn off all the auto...
...to be flat. I get mine processed by a lab so I have flat film. If your film isn't flat then another holder might help. I tried the Betterscanning holder and didn't find any difference. But then again, my film is flat. I could see an advantage if not flat especially with the Betterscanning...
...so.
Yes, new holder are definitely a need. Still, i want something more modular and reliable like the variable height holders from betterscanning as i said before.
Now the question is, is it worth getting the ANR glass with or avoid it to spare a bit and buy a normal Anti reflection glass...
I use the scanner for multiple formats so a dedicated scanner isn't really viable for me at the moment. Thanks for the betterscanning links I'll take a look....
Les - its mainly an issue with sharpness, colours are fine and resolution I know has its limits with it being a flatbed. Some of the...
You can get improved results, by
1. Setting the film height accurately as possible, I have a betterscanning holder, I have hear good things about the
DigitaLIZA 35mm Scanning Mask.
2. Appropriate use of USM makes a big difference.
Hope that helps
I am using an Epson V500 which I have had for years. Following a house move I lost all of the film holders so I got in touch with Epson and I was able to buy replacements relatively cheaply. Certainly less than the 10% offered by the company you bought the scanner from. Take the 10% and buy...
...discount (trying to get more since 10% is low for a useless scanner as is), download the drivers from the epson website and buy the betterscanning film holders+ANR Glass.
Considering the good deal i got for the V600 I'm more keen on keeping it, get a discount and work on the rest. Getting...
...it does (4x5 negs are dreamy, and medium format are very good) but even 35mm does pretty well as long as they are flat. I think the BetterScanning glass inserts would do very well, on that front.
I've scanned my negs in pages to make a quick contact sheet, also, and it's given great results...
...better with their higher end scanners and such, but I have no incentive to try it since I already own and am used to Vuescan.
The betterscanning holders work well for other scanners, like the V750, but for my Epson 4990, the lens is focused directly on the plate glass and is...
1. AFAIK the only feature that VueScan/SilverFast has as far working directly with the epson scanner hardware is the ability to manually adjust the exposure gain, everything else is just software.
2. I have the betterscanning holder for my 4990 and yes it offers an improvement.
...of a strip of negatives. Not sure how this works since the glass holder looks like it only mounts one negative at a time.
Epson using Betterscanning holders can do some automation, too? I guess.
Anyway... this is all VERY good information to have. Thank you. From a BEST point of view, the...
Thanks but these are examples of the quality of scans that the Nikon Coolscan 5000/9000+Nikonscan can achieve automatically with no pre or post work - except for copyright, using some of those b&w films you may be using.
BTW, I still don't really understand what you were comparing.
BTW, here...
