Well, at least they're forthcoming about being months behind, and why! On the bright side, BetterScanning didn't vanish and leave a working webstore behind with no one to fulfill the orders (or if they did, I never found where to order product from them without emailing an actual person).
And now we're right back to BetterScanning. That was one of the things they sold, genuine ANR glass film holders for various scanners.
Meanwhile, there are ways to combat the static that makes plastics dust magnets. One I recall is liquid fabric softener, diluted with water and applied with a...
...the V850 does a great job as well. Good enough for my purposes on the keepers. DSLR scans will probably be the first round. I see that BetterScanning's HeightAdjustable mount works with many scanners, and it might not be a terrible thing to start with a 4990 for $100 or thereabouts as Mod-1...
I have a v800, and it works fine for 4x5. I find a small amount of sharpening is beneficial.
Peculiar about the betterscanning holder-- He's apparently been doing some work on his website, because it use to specifically list the v800/v850, and in fact, the old page is still there...
...height adjustable with a slider at each corner of the holders. Much simpler to adjust than the Betterscanner one. I had bought the Betterscanning holder for my V600. But didn;t like it. Frankly, the V850 holders are perfectly acceptable. I do agree dust is more of a problem because of the...
...north that might be even less worth the trouble.
1) You can get V600's, V700's and V800's and so on. What's your experience?
2) BetterScanning holders for 4X5: Notice these are not offered for the 800 series machines and wonder whether that's due to Epson's efforts to better resolve focus...
...850 holders do a good job (though I've read the MF holder can be a little uncooperative).
That said, the big advantages of the Betterscanning models from what I can tell is 1) height adjustment is a little more fine-tuned and 2) the ability to invert the mount so that you are only scanning...
Looking for the following:
- 1 MF film holder (ideally w/ two pieces of ANR glass)
- 1 variable mounting station w/ ANR glass (fluid and dry mount capability)
I would buy new but as Betterscanning seems to unfortunately be defunct, I will just hope someone no longer has need for these supplies.
I see that their website no longer has the "We plan to re-open in August" message, which implies that they're back in business.
But I've sent several emails to them over the past month with no response at all. Anyone know if they're actually around?

...in the darkroom, etc, etc. You also may use a programmer imn the socket to start it several times per day to have a dust free room.
Betterscanning holders have a nice Pro feel. The Epson ones do the same but they feel like cheap plastic. If you have sharp negatives then your priority is...
...about that ANR glass: I like that it is removable in the Betterscanning holders, because I am finding it impossible to keep the ANR "glass" (I think it's really plastic) in the Epson holders free of dust. My negatives are all quite clean, but the Epson holders seem to manufacture their own...
Not particularly :) Especially if reversing the image results in reduced quality/sharpness. On the other hand, if the betterscanning holders keep the film flatter with the emulsion side down (instead of up), reversals might be an acceptable nuisance.
Epson's film holders are designed to scan emulsion side up; Betterscanning holders suggest emulsion side down (or at least suggest. Does it make a difference? (Assuming film is kept flat in either case.) Any loss in image sharpness/quality if scanned emulsion side down and then "flipped"?
...the flatbed glass. You need to use the Epson film holder to activate the primary lens. That raises a question to those who use the Betterscanning holder. How do you get the primary lens to activate. The film holder has little holes on it that tell the machine which holder and film you're...
Thanks! As I said, Betterscanning's dedicated medium format holders are too short for me, but I am considering buying their large "variable height mounting station." I'm glad to know their products work for you. Ah, the joys of spending even more money ...
Hi
I've had an Epson 4180 for maybe 15yrs now. When I got it I quickly bought a betterscanning.com holder (pre ANR glass).
Recently, and I don't remember it always being there, I am seeing defined light/dark strips that line up with scanner lights. When I use the Epson film holder the...
I have EpsonScan v3 with my V500 and I'm using a BetterScanning 120 holder, so I uncheck Thumbnails, so I can select each frame with a border around, which allows me to straighten before cropping.
It's very easy and not very time consuming and you select the frames you want.
The Plustek OpticFilm 120 takes 3 6x7 stripes.
With my V500 I have a Betterscanning holder with ANR glass and it was too small for 3 shots, so I saw 0.5 cm on top and 1cm on bottom of the window (the glass is just long enough) so I can now scan 3 shots a time.
I use the Betterscanning holder with anr glass on my V500 and the holder is slightly too small for 3 6x7 shots, so I used a saw and removed 0.5 cm on the top side and 1 cm on the bottom side of the window, and it works !
...As you mention, the 750 frames are available, and are relatively inexpensive. I've been considering if it's possible to make some betterscanning style height-adjusters for them.
One very cheap, but fiddly option, would be to remove (gently!) the flap from the 800 series holder (it unclips...
...I agree that the film holders are super fiddly, however, and I've come close to snapping mine on a number of occasions. I'll have to check out the BetterScanning options again, as last time I looked earlier this summer he had temporarily ceased sales and I believe is back in business now.
+100!
I find the stock film holders very difficult to work with. I switched to a Betterscanning holder for medium format, which I used for a while, and now I mostly use the Lomography Digitaliza holders for both MF and 35mm. They're really good at holding the film flat. For 127 4x4 negatives...
..., it should com efrom a flawed test. Perhaps they had the height in a wrong position or they placed the curling facing the wrong side... who knows...
Those are not the first holders for the Epson using ANR, some Betterscanning holders also use ANR.
...the curling up and the ANR glass flatens the film, if you buy those adjustable holders then I'd recommend you check the sharpness while changing heigh in the each of the corners.
You also may buy 3rd party holders, like those from Betterscanning, they have a more pro feel, but price is higher.
I used the EpsonScan on my V500, which is very simple using the histogram adjustment, but very effective with the BetterScanning MF holder.
I also used VueScan, which is a mix between document scanning and photo scanning. I could never get the same result, so I gave it up.
SF is very...
