    HCB Appreciation

OK, let me try and explain again. The VIDOM finder allows you to view different angles of view for different lens focal length (not I believe why HCB used this attachment for most of his life). It also allows adjustment for parallax (not I believe why HCB used this attachment for most of his...

    HCB Appreciation

That viewfinder is in all my posts (see picture on left) and I have tried to explain why this is the greatest asset to any 35mm camera many times on APUG. But people just don't get it and so I have given up trying to explain. I use one all the time.

    HCB Appreciation

Look at this: - Note the forhead of the girl on the right and the woman behind seperated by a fraction of a millimetre. This is what makes HCB the greatest photographer of the 20th century.

The myth of smoothness of leicas

The viewfinder of the M2 is better than the M3 and if the wind on isn't smooth, perhaps it needs a service and clean. Have you ever wound on a Zenith camera? It's like two house bricks rubbing together.

    Leica M or Leica IIIF?

Which do you prefer between the Leica M models and the Leica IIIF? I can't decide, as although the M gives a more precise viewfinder framing, the IIIF is a Barnack smaller camera with greater tactile feel.

    Am I a Leica nutcase?

I recently purchased an almost mint Leica IIIF without the self- timer (simplification of functions) and although I have never put a film through it, I occasionally just look through the viewfinder and fire the shutter. It is the quietest Leica I have ever come across and feel I should put it to...

    Leica rangefinder appreciation

I just think the Barnack Leica has a tactile quality that is unique. Granted, it may not be as fast to use, but it has that je ne sais quoi that makes it so special. Some years ago I had a Leica IIIg which is often considered as the ultimate Barnack Leica and I could not get on with it. It felt...

    Leica rangefinder appreciation

I have always thought that the best Leica design is the Leica II. However, I have used a Leica M2 for many years, in the belief that it is the best practical design for optimum speed and function. More recently I am thinking the Leica IIIF is probably preferable to any M series camera, due to...

In your opinion, what are the best non-Leica rangefinders ever built?

Fascinating, I have never heard of the Honor camera. Do you have a picture of one?

    Ideal Digital camera

This is probably the wrong thread for this post, but couldn't find one to fit. Moderators feel free to redirect. I would suggest that the ideal digital camera would be one that was the same size and weight as the Leica II, with a collapsible 50mm lens, but a viewfinder like an M2. It should be...

    Leica MP thoughts

Then buy a Hasselblad 500c/m and a 35mm SLR, but you wont have a Leica. Also, what makes you think the M3 has a brighter viewfinder than an M2?

    Possible design of Leica II

I sometimes wonder if it is possible to improve on the Oskar Barnack design of the Leica II by designing a camera of the same weight and size (tactile handling), but incorporating a M2 style viewfinder (with 50mm frame lines only) and a leaf shutter. Would such a design be possible?

Screw to bayonet adaptor to fit an M series lens

I have a bayonet to screw adaptor to fit a Leica screw lens onto an M series camera, but does anyone know if there is a screw to bayonet adaptor to fit an M series lens to a screw Leica (and would it work)? If you could do this to a Leica II with an improved viewfinder, with say a bright line...

Top 10 classic 35mm film cameras

The Leica cameras are a good example of form/function/design and technological progression over time and as with many other products there comes a time when further progression does not improve the product. Although I use an M2 as my main camera, I can't help thinking that Oskar Barnack hit the...

    35mm problems

John, hi there and look no further than what I consider the most useful gadget, namely the Leitz Vidom universal finder as shown in my Avatar. For those not familiar with this little device, let me mention that many years ago I noticed 2 pictures of HCB with a camera, one taken when in his 20’s...

    Viewfinder accuracy

No, I mean any camera, but can you explain why any SLR viewfinder is more accurate than that?

    Merry Christmas

Christmas morning and outside it was lightly snowing against a landscape of crisp white. We started to exchange Christmas presents and my wife handed me a gift-wrapped box. I could tell immediately by the weight it was something interesting. As I removed the outer gift wrapping, I experienced a...

    A RETROSPECTIVE ON BAD CAMERAS

The Zenit is one of the only cameras I know that when you look through the viewfinder you have a vision of the interior around the pentaprism, distracting the eye from the image in the middle. Also when you wind on it sounds like two house bricks grinding together. However from a design point of...

    Thinking about getting a Leica

I am interested in this latency effect you quote and wonder if a Leica with a diaphram shutter would give greater latency than one with a focal plane?

    Thinking about getting a Leica

The main point here is that you are thinking of moving to a rangefinder camera as opposed to an SLR. The most important difference is that a rangefinder camera with a bright-line finder will allow you to see above, below and outside the side to side image through the viewfinder, thus acting as...

What do you guys prefer a Leica M3 or a Nikon F?

The main difference is that one is an SLR and the other is a rangefinder system. It is of course a matter of personal preference, but for me it would be the Leica. The reason being that the viewfinder allows you to see above, below and each side of your shot, thus providing an aid to composition.
