No comment, but I'm usually concerned when I see people trying to engage in a discussion with their camera equipment. :)

...talking to to reinforce that it's not they or the lens that gives a photograph 'character' but it's the photographer. So they can make-do with their 50mm Summicron between them, I'm not having the R9 getting ideas above it's station and looking down on the poor R-E as undeserving of a Summilux.

Lens price increase could reflect the fact that many are buying R-lenses to use with adapters on cameras like my Sony 7RII. One of the very best lenses for my Leica-R adapter on my Sony is the old 180mm f2.8. It absolutely amazed me. Heavy, but perfect optically. It also works just peachy on...

...of the Leica ecosystem — seem to be picking up in price. Not just collector-condition R6.2s, but even lenses like the 135 Elmarit or 50 Summicron-R now command figures that would have been unthinkable a few years ago. Could be wishful thinking on Wetzlar’s part — their way of softly...

    Looking for a decent rangefinder

Yes, I had a Canon P and loved that camera with its 50mm f1.8 lens. The Canon 7s I had was nice too and it had a built in meter, but I preferred the Canon P for being user friendly. Canon also had a add-on meter for these Canon cameras that worked reasonably well. Another nice camera with a...

...to choose from). Finally, the Auto shutter speed Minolta CLE is nice when properly serviced. A fun camera but know that they're considered 'Light Duty' cameras. Better to go with a low-mileage fully manual Leica CL. Fortunately they're typically married to a wonderful 40mm f/2 Summicron lens...👀

What was your last piece of equipment that died and how did it die?

A Summicron Asph about 20 years ago where some internal piece broke and the aperture just went round and round, like a carousel. The well known Leica tech who fixed it in the US claimed that new leica lenses are junk because they're all plastic inside. She's know for her hyperbole, but you...

    Is 36MP excessive?

...a full page print caught my eye. The subject was what was possible with slow film (32 ISO or less) and the best development possible. So the print was like 48x and still sharp (but he grain was a downside). The book was printed in the late '70's and the camera/lens was an M5 and 50 Summicron.

So the Summicron 50mm arrived. What a difference to the 28-70mm!

Where are the well-used Leica M's?

CR, My first Leica was an M2 bought as a university student for $175. My two lens kit is a 21mm & 35mm although lately if i take one lens it's the tiny canon 28mm 2.8 which punches well above its weight category. (photo below wide open 1/60th, tri-x) I've had many different Ms over the years and...

...for a CLA. It shoots flawlessly and - like I said - it is first among equals in my stash of 35mm machines. The M2 with the 35mm f/2 ASPH Summicron is my go-to combination that gets used at least half the time in this format. I am taking it on a trip later this summer with that lens, a 50...

    Buying a 50mm when already owning a 28-70mm zoom?

I was unaware that Kyocera produced the 35-70mm f4.0 Vario-Elmar lens -- which very well might have actually been made by Tomioka, which Kyocera acquired when they bought Yashica. Minolta made the earlier 35-70mm f3.5 Vario-Elmar version.

Good choice. Now, with the money you saved by choosing the Summicron instead of the Summilux, and by returning the two previously mentioned lenses, you have some left to get the 28 and 90

    Buying a 50mm when already owning a 28-70mm zoom?

For clarity if the OP wants a zoom lens that optically is pretty well as good as the 50mm Summicron it is the 35-70mm Vario Elmar f/4 1997-2009 and manufactured by Leica's partner Kyocera. But it's only optically as good at 50mm because it isn't an f/2 lens and many of Leica's sought after...

Just picked up a user-grade 50mm Summicron-R (11216) to put it through its paces — particularly curious how it holds up against my much-maligned but secretly capable 28–70mm Vario-Elmar. Will report back once I’ve run a few rolls. While checking prices on Leica’s Classic Store site, something...

Hello Ralph! The 28-70mm Vario-Elmar-R is a stepless zoom, maybe you mean the nice but very expensive Tri-Elmar-M?

...range but has several fixed settings within the range. Your lens is optimized for those settings similar to a fixed-focus lens, such as the Summicron. Consequently, you will probably see little to no difference in optical performance. A Summilux would have the advantage of the larger...

    Buying a 50mm when already owning a 28-70mm zoom?

The short answer is that the Summicron-R 50's (both variants) are some of the all-time great lenses and the (badge-engineered Sigma) 28-70 isn't. If the 28-70 had been a current-ish Sigma Art series lens (or the Kyocera made 35-70), then that would be a different matter. The 50 Summicron-R still...

...faster 50mm with more pop and separation to work more subtly within the crowd. So now I’m puzzled. On one hand, I’m considering adding the Summicron-R 50mm (v.2) for its compactness, speed, and optical character. On the other, this afternoon hinted that I might be better off complementing...

    Buying a 50mm when already owning a 28-70mm zoom?

Thanks for the input so far. Some of my additional thoughts: the Summicron-R 50mm is smaller, likely lighter, and definitely less obtrusive than the 28–70 Vario-Elmar. That appeals to me — especially for quieter, more deliberate shooting. What I’m really wondering now: besides the wider...

    Buying a 50mm when already owning a 28-70mm zoom?

Thinking about adding a Leica Summicron-R 50mm (v.2) to my kit — thoughts? I currently shoot with the 28-70mm Vario-Elmar, which covers a nice range and offers decent versatility. However, I’m wondering if it makes sense to add the Summicron-R 50mm (v.2) prime to the mix. The 50mm Summicron is...

...zone focusing and often stop down for depth of field control, I’m starting to think I might not need the faster Summilux after all. The Summicron at f/2.0 or stopped down will likely deliver everything I want in sharpness and character, especially for street and documentary styles where...

You can only be a good photrographer if you have a camera with a red dot

For the hell of it I tested my M5/Summicron against my $15 Agfa Solina/Apotar in a street shooting scenario: Pre-set focusing, counting on depth of field; Smaller f-stop for increased depth of same; Slower shutter speed to make up for the stopped-down lens; Walking; Taking the shot when I...
