Immediately thought about Joel Meyerowitz' clotheline shots in Cape Light

INDEED!

If anything, I would crop the top and left side slightly to get rid of those distractions. The format may have been an artistic decision so I wouldn't change that. If done again, it might be worth cosidering swinging the camera a bit more to the right to not cut off the (equally interesting) Adirondak chair and point down just a tad to "crop in the camera."

I wonder if it would work better in color...

If I'd been sufficiently aware at the time I'd have tried to get that whole chair in and trim a little of the left hand side, though I also don't actually mind having that bit of path, adds to the depth a touch).

Steady on now! let's not get carried away! But no, there's a desolation to these places. They are actually pretty, but if you've been a British child on a particularly British beach, on a particularly British day, you know these are black and white photos.

I like it the way it is. It is a good photograph. OP- use it as a learning experience or starting point. And you don't have to know why you like something, just that you like it. Overanalyzing things just leads nowhere.

It is RUDE to alter someone's photograph without their express permission, especially when you make it worse. C'mon!

This photo is a particular moment in time. You can't go back and take it again. The living aspect of it forgives any problem you might see in framing. No crop is necessary. It's not possible to take that photo again. It's a small chip of reality.

Depends on the context.
It certainly isn't rude in a thread where the photographer asks for input or help understanding about a photograph's strengths and weaknesses, or otherwise asks for comments or for advice about what might be done with it.

I really like the motion, my first though was it feels cold . Knowing it was Northern England at the seaside and the ground looks wet, I bet the wind was cold.
