I have recently purchased a Canon F1n from Ebay and I had asked the seller about the canon logos on the front of the body which are the same matt black as the rest of the body and not white as is usual.
He told me that he had purchased the camera like that and did not know when or how it was done, athough it was very well executed. It looks like factory, indistinguishable from the rest of the paintwork.
I bought the camera partly because of the way it looked and I am wondering if this finish was a special request or order from the factory of something applied at a later date. Any information would be most welcome as a search of the internet has until now proved fruitless.

I don't recall Canon ever issuing camera's with blacked out lettering. Two answers spring to mind.

1. The lettering is prone to yellowing possibly from the photographer smoking. Blacking out the letters removes the ugly nicotine yellow look.

2. For what ever reason someone didn't want to advertise the camera.

Thanks for your reply but the lettering has never been blackened out, the lettering is indistinguishable from the rest of the matt black paintwork. Very odd but it was one of the main reasons for purchasing the camera.

Don't discount the possibility that it reflects a particular market only.
For example, there were far more black Canon FTb bodies in Canada than in the USA, because the Canadian distributor was different from the USA distributor.

The black paint on my F1n is not matte nor glossy, it is a semi-gloss, not dull at all and does reflect some light at the correct angle. Could someone in the past have repainted your body? Perhaps your body was special ordered in matte for a specific project, Government agency or Armed Forces.

White engraving infill can sometimes be removed with a toothpick, especially if some falls out and the owner wants to make the rest look neater. There is also the trend that to make your camera invisible you only need to remove the white lettering or the red dot.

Thank you for your reply, the paint finish looks factory and I am just curious about its origins. I bought the camera because of the unique was it looks. Never seen another one like it.
