Thank you @jeffreyg for selecting my submission for May. I am not worthy! This month’s theme is “Figures and Silhouettes”. I am a huge fan of old noir cinematography where characters seem to be engulfed in mystery. But the theme here is not restrictive to that particular style nor doe it need...
I looked over the themes from the past years and a lot of subjects have already been done. I do have a few ideas and will open up a new MSA either tonight or tomorrow. Today is Election Day so will be out and about.
I didn’t give up small format just that image quality is so much higher with medium format and I prefer the look and handling of Rolleiflex. I’d take whatever gear is best for the task. I took my 4x5 to China, Japan, Belgium, and Italy when Quickloads were still available.
I have a post war Rolleiflex 2.8A with a 80mm f/2.8 Zeiss Opton Tessar probably from the late 40’s. The camera is in excellent condition and lenses are clean but still the photos are just ok. That lens didn’t have the best reputation.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I have used Rodinal down to the last drop with the crystals rattling when I shake the bottle and never had any problems. How old was your bottle? Now shooting much less I can’t go through developers like I used to so it’s now all Rodinal and HC110 and between...
Another one from Bangkok. In Buddhist countries the monks in the early morning walk around for alms. I usually don’t photograph them out of respect but thought the juxtaposition with these two would make an interesting shot. I set the lens to 4 feet.
I used an SWC for street photography for a few trips just to force myself to see with one but limitations outweighed the positives so I stuck with the Rolleiflex. They are scanned but not uploaded. I don’t know what type of photography you are looking for but I have a few on this iPad I am...
My lens came back from DAG with a helicoil relube so I wanted to test it around my neighborhood. Leitz 35mm Summilux @1.4
This is a horrible lens if you want technical perfection but nearly any modern lens can give you that.
This is often the subject of heated arguments whether vintage or modern lenses are best for b/w. It’s up to you and the viewer. All my LF lenses are modern multi coated Schneiders and Rodenstocks because I prioritize image circle coverage. Lens characteristics have more to do with the look than...
I have used 1:7 and 1:9 DDX with success for sheet film. I:7 is also what I use for TMax developer. I wouldn’t do 1:9 again just that one time but it was fine. I have also reused DDX 1:4 for more than one run just added some time. I don’t recall the times but they are online.
I didn’t know that. This explains why there are so many abandoned gas stations still standing throughout the desert Southwest when other buildings are being used. Tucumcari NM is a goldmine for slow decay large format photography if you are into the subject matter.
