    Old Nikon Glass

Old Nikon lenses are great. I use my old AI lenses regularly on my D850, and while they definitely aren't as sharp as my modern zooms, they're still plenty good enough even on that beast of a sensor. Needless to say, they're pretty much perfect for whatever film I happen to be using for my...

Thank you! The sky is partially due to the filter, and mostly due to me bungling exposure. I forgot to take my FE off of 1/90, and shot the whole roll as if it was on Auto. Recovering the densest highlights I've ever seen brought down the sky as a side effect.

what waS your last photography related purchase?

Tamron make some great lenses. The only autofocus lens I ever bought was a Tamron, and it takes some very good pictures at about half the cost of a first-party equivalent.

Kodak films direct from Eastman Kodak (was: Kodacolor 100. New)

If EK starts resurrecting old films again, my money's on Plus-X being first. Plus-X fills a medium-speed niche that's currently empty in Kodak's traditional-grain films. While a return of Panatomic-X would be sweet, it's niche of extremely low grain is filled by T-Max.

Definitely going to want a low-contrast developer for this film. Most shots on this roll came out pretty unusable due to the almost complete lack of midtones, but a few turned out better for it.

Considering Domke bags (for now, F2 and F4)

I have two F2s for my various cameras. One is a new production, and one is a late-70s model. They're both excellent, and offer more than enough room for the various lenses and accessories I tend to take with me. I haven't used an F4, but the extra size of the F2 isn't really a problem for me...

Kodak films direct from Eastman Kodak (was: Kodacolor 100. New)

As far as I can tell, yes. As a long-time lover of Colorplus over Gold, I'm glad to see it back in the hands of Eastman Kodak.

Nikon F2 - Damaged Ratchet Gear on Winding Shaft

Yeah, I decided to not do that for good reason. My backup Nikon's been recently CLA'd, and the tiny bit of extra shutter accuracy isn't worth several hundred dollars.

Phoenix II - released 2025-07-16 - speculation and hints during the lead up

Yeah, it took a bit of experimentation, but my local lab was able to get some scanner settings that make Phoenix 1.0 look decent. Can't wait to snag a roll of 2.0 for myself and see how it turns out.

Nikon F2 - Damaged Ratchet Gear on Winding Shaft

Got in touch with Sover Wong, and he apparently has a tool to safely extract the shaft, so I'll be sending it to him when he opens bookings. I just need to set an alarm so I get in early, but my beloved camera will still live. Might send my other Nikon over as well for a quick once-over, just...

Nikon F2 - Damaged Ratchet Gear on Winding Shaft

Yup. Once my next paycheck comes in, I'll take them up on their offer of a $200 freshly CLA'd body. My old camera will live on as a donor camera so that many others may be repaired.

Nikon F2 - Damaged Ratchet Gear on Winding Shaft

All right. The final diagnosis is that the winding shaft itself is broken, while the gear is perfectly fine. They say that it's all but impossible to remove from a donor camera while keeping it intact, so unless I can find one that was never installed in a camera, then it's beyond repair.

Nikon F2 - Damaged Ratchet Gear on Winding Shaft

I'll be taking it to Eurotech for Sorin's opinion. I'm actually curious as to what it is now. If I can figure out what it is, I'll keep in touch. Thank you.

Nikon F2 - Damaged Ratchet Gear on Winding Shaft

They say the reason they suspect it's something with the winder because the problem doesn't occur unless film is loaded. If the camera's empty, then it works flawlessly. If there's a roll in it, then it jams after a random number of shots.
