Vintage Aircraft, Vintage Contax

About 10 years ago, I had a chance to take some pictures for the local air museum. It was a morning flight over southeastern Michigan, on Memorial Day. The subject was the museum's B-17, and her escort, a privately owned P-51.

In addition to my normal cameras, I packed a WW2 era Contax II and lens. I was shooting from a B-25D, and REALLY wanted to try for a 'vintage image'.

It was VERY rough ride, and - like the other folks in the back of the veteran airplane - I was as sick as a flying dog.

As we flew low over the rolling hills, things calmed down and the countryside was greener than green.

It wasn't hard for a romantic to imagine flying over England.

I opened the port, hung out into the propwash and made three shots from the Contax. There's a little camera movement,
just like the real thing. Oh, well, I wanted a vintage shot !

My thanks to the vintage crew !

I keep on coming back to this one so it's time I posted a comment. In a word GREAT. Yes it could be England of '44/45. Shows what can be done with a 50mm lens. I know the B17 is big but you must have been quite close to get this shot. There's strange warm English beer called bitter and a game of darts to look forward to in the Red lion pub.

Few years ago I went to Palm Springs with my wife and a friend of her. To my horror they went shopping as they are fashion's victims. Luckily I went to the Air force Museum. There was a pristine B17G in a Hangar with the crew hatch open. An old man was there, he was in fact a B17 pilot, and for $10 offered me the visit of the interior.
That man almost made me cry with all the stories he had ( he had to ditch in the channel) and I was amazed how small it was inside. How cramped it could be with all the equipment, ammo and stuff.
My mom used to see them in the sky in France when she was a kid. They were heroes then, they still are.
