Two weeks in. 2nd picture out.

Two weeks in. 2nd picture out.

Slight misnomer in the title. I've been battling away for two weeks in my new darkroom. The first picture I worked on is still being worked on. I've also printed a few family pics out, just so that the wife can see that something productive is happening.

Well back to this shot. This is the second major print I've attempted. I had to rotate the easel to get the viaduct straight, split grade, burnt in bridge and bottom edge. Still not sure about the composition and tone. Any advice and suggestions requested.

Thanks Charles. I've tried a couple of crops tonight but the neg doesn't really hold up to such a large degree of cropping and enlargement. I'm very fortunate that it's on my doorstep and the time of year is about the same time that I took this shot which was about a year ago. I'm going to go in the next couple of weeks ,weather permitting, but the main problem is that it's in a small ravine. There's about a 30 foot drop on either side of the river! Still, it's an amazing little area which has remnants of old mills going back 500 years so there's plenty there to capture.
On a positive note I think I've finally cracked another print of a different part of the river, about 50 yards downstream, so I'll post that on Monday.

the stream is nice, but I wish the bridge/aqueduct in the background was properly included in the photo.

I really like this image. The stonework arches in the background add a sense of mystery to the tried and true waterfall image giving it added interest. I like the tonal values of the bottom part of the image more than those of the top areas, which seem a bit flat to my eye. I look forward to seeing more from this area.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Randy, I agree totally with what you say. The part of the print that I've struggled with is the top centre part. There is a lot of vegetation but it all just seems to "mush" a little bit with very little separation. In addition it all has about the same tonal range which probably adds to the lack of definition.

When the weather eventually clears I'm going to take a visit back to the area.

hey Lee, great image

so how do you get such a beautiful range of tones with out using some exotic film/dev combo that seems to be norm on this site

Ray, minilab developed film. If I try something else it may never work. The hardest part for me, besides getting a good picture, is getting the film development right. The 35mm seems to come out OK but I'm still struggling a bit with 120. I'm not too bothered about the magic bullet, any bullet will do!
