From a workshop I took yesterday taught by Joni Sternbach at ICP. We used Kinoflow lights and they did a great job creating enough light for indoor shooting
Thanks all; I've been interested in this process for a long time and have been acquiring the chemistry, lab apparati, space and 1/2 million other things needed to get started for a few months now. That being said, for me theres nothing like watching a tintype come up in the fixer 2 minutes after you shot it. Happy to share the little I know so PM me if you have a question
Cool! The image color looks very red/plum on my screen. Is the original that color and what size is the plate? 75 seconds is a long exposure for a portrait - was the model using a headrest? Collodion is way too much fun...
Thanks Kerik; It's a 5"x4" so this image is slightly bigger than the original.
The midtones are slightly less red but I stink with Photoshop and this is the best approximation of the tonal scale I've been able to get. The original is actually alot richer and smoother-I was stunned-these are a b*tch to scan.
The headrest was used as a point of reference- as was the back of the chair -but not attached to her neck. Knowing the length of the exposure I opted for a "Cameronesqe" pose..helps to have a classic beauty as a classmate.
BTW-We used the 'Old Workhorse' collodion formula and "trophy tin"aluminum and for me it worked so much better the original japanned plates
Vic,
Thanks for the info. What developer formula did you use and how long did you develop? What did you fix in? I only ask all these questions because I'm trying to figure out how you got that color... The trophy aluminum is nice - very easy to use. Have you made a black glass ambrotype yet?? If not, get ready to be blown away...
