Solemn Sadness in the Heart of a Free Spirit

In keeping with trying to really master Tmax400 which everyone raves about but I've yet to get perfect, I shot this while shooting my Abandoned Books project (on digital so I can't show you the spectacular image I took of the scene... eeek!).

It was shot at 200 and pushed like 2 stops to 16 minutes in Rodinal and I still feel like I should have to bring it up another quarter stop in post (I didn't in this version, but I think in the scan I had to adjust it from the center range to get the right look in scan). so really, I can't figure out why it's rated at 400, it's like a 100 speed film based on those numbers...

  1. Yes
I used Tmax 400 for while and was getting the most amazing looking negatives with it and PMK Pyro. Was I getting better/different looking prints? Not really - at least not that these old(er) eyes could see. However, I was working with 8 x 10 film and not much enlarging required there. I was kind of put off by the higher price and 10 sheet boxes of Tmax 400 and eventually switched to Ilford film.

Dan, yea, that was my other concern, ironically I recently decided after darkroom printing that I actually enjoyed the film more and have decided to invest in it, so I've got 2 boxes in my freezer and when my Ilford is gone I'll dive into the 8x10 TMY-2 sheets. I also decided that I would do the same with Velvia50 and Acros100 so I made the conscious decision to spend more, it's hard to imagine since my stance for so long was that it was too much and ilford was good (which it is) but ultimately the thing that got me was reciprocity with the B&W, it's become more important in my work to have good reciprocity.Cheers
