In looking through my new copy of John Sexton's Recollections, I was startled to see plate 32 which reminded me so much of this 'graph I made a few years ago. I claim no other comparison to Mr. Sexton's work beyond the coincidence of a similar composition, but I though it was cool nonetheless.

Eric, the 'mat and frame' is pretty simple to do in PS. First, 'select all', then go to Edit and click on 'stroke'. Choose the number of pixels you want (I chose 4 for the bevel cut effect) and the color, then click 'okay'. (Click on the color box and you will get the color array. Place the little circle on the color you want...I chose a middle gray.) Click on stroke, and then deselect from the menu bar on top. Then go to canvas size. Add about 100-125 pixels to each dimension and click 'okay'. Then go to 'select all' again and then to 'edit...stroke'. Again, choose the size 'frame' you want...I continued to choose 4 pixels...and the color. I changed the color to black with the little circular cursor. Then deselect and that's it.
I consider it ethical to use here since it has nothing to do with the photograph itself, but only with its presentation. Since the scan attempts to emulate the actual print, the 'mat' is also an attempt to make the image look a bit like it does in 'real life'.
I think it's exciting that photographs depicting such different scale can be so similar. It reminds me of how William Garnett's arial images resembled some of Brett Weston's close ups... Anyway, your image is outstanding and has really got me thinking. Thanks for posting! Best. Shawn
Each image you've posted recently is strong enough to stand on its own, there's no doubt about that. Have you ever sequenced your images, such as in a portfolio or a photo essay? I think they could be even more powerful flowing from one to the next, where each images rhythms echo the previous, and build towards the next...know what I mean?
