Portrait of Daniel Lin

A full-plate ruby ambrotype of Daniel Lin taken at the 2nd Annual Northern Michigan photographer's gathering at Bill Schwab's place last weekend. I am trading Daniel this plate for one of his wonderful prints shown at the get-together. There was a lot of great work there and it was especially difficult to choose an image to swap from Daniel's great portfolio of images. I'm really looking forward to seeing the images he and the other participants produce from the trip.

The image is on purple glass and was from an experimental formula I compounded using sodium bromide and sodium iodide along with Everclear in place of the additional ether most formulae call for. This is also one of my first plates this year and the first full-plate developed in my new mobile darkroom (a converted class-C motorhome). So, I'm pleased with the results on several levels.

Not only is it a phenomenal portrait using an unusually difficult process, but it's also nice to put a face to a name of one of the most talented photographers here on APUG. Two photographers whom I, from a distance, have huge respect for.
I wish I could have been there with you guys. Next year I really hope nothing gets in the way, because I will be there.
There is a gathering in Minnesota taking place in September, up on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Anybody interested, from anywhere in the country, are of course welcome to join in. The more the merrier!

outstanding work of art...

simply... wonderful.

First and foremost I think its a great relaxed portrait! The process just adds to the image - for me wet plate just has an incredible depth with portraiture, 3-D even! If folk can get the same effect with safer and more easily obtained chemicals so much the better

This has a wonderful relaxed and timeless feel to it. Well done

Joe, seeing you do this and watching the process in the magic bus was a great experience. If I was not so clumsy in the darkroom and would probably kill myself...I would probably give this process a shot.

Beautiful Image

Regards,
John

Joe, this is flat out cool and it was fun and educational to watch you work this process at Bill's place.
