Opium Ceremony

Opium Ceremony

During my last trip to India, three years ago, I happened to witness this tribal ceremony. My wife was disgusted. In her opinion, I shouldn't have taken any shot. She was probably right (as ever), but the temptation was simply too strong...

Fuji slide films just seem to love that part of the world. I have wondered what might be found in a project to photograph people smoking legal dope here in Colorado. It would be pretty hard to get anything like this, I bet.

I love the colors, the composition. The subject, well it is a part of life, so why not document it. It would be the same if it were in Japan and a tea ceremony.

The colors in this are beautiful and the exposure is spot on for the mood. I didn't see any problem with it before I read all the comments, I couldn't tell what was happening and it just looked to me like the guy was pouring water into the other guys hands. I had no idea this was opium, I feel very ignorant, even after looking at it, I don't see the opium because my exposure to substances has always been seeing needs and spoons in an opium scene. I don't do drugs (save coffee and alcohol) and so my experience is limited in that area. Now that I know what is supposed to be happening here, I still don't see why she was so bothered by it. I'm glad you took this shot, it's honestly the kind of shot I'd expect to see in National Geographic. I don't say that lightly.
